It was one of the great joys of my life to know Bill Bartholomay and be his friend for the past 50 years.
Some will remember Bill the Major League Baseball legend, Bill the insurance industry-leader, Bill the most well-met man in the world, or Bill the person who discovered Hank Aaron. I will remember Bill as one of the handful of people who truly changed my life.
I had a dream 30 years ago to pair my job, in executive search, with my passion for sports. My Dad could not have been more encouraging in my pursuit of that, but it took a special person to help activate that dream. Bill served as Chairman of Major League Baseball’s Ownership Committee and he personally selected me, a nobody, to run the Major League Baseball Commissioner search. However, it was more than just that he picked me. For the better part of two years, he worked directly with me with a kindness, a warmth, and a class that was unrivaled. He not only hired me for a career-changing role, he mentored me in a life-changing way.
I am sad I won’t be able to call him this coming Father’s Day or on Christmas as I always did. But I love getting to celebrate the incredible legacy of a man I consider family.
Love you, Bill! #majorleaguebaseball #mlb #baseball #sportsbiz #rip #atlantabraves
