Crocs are a type of shoe that have become increasingly popular in recent years. They are made from afoam-like materialand are known for being verycomfortable and lightweight. Crocs come in many different colors and styles, and can even be decorated with other accessories.

The shoes were originally created for boaters, prioritizing grip-focused soles, waterproofmaterials, and foot protection.

The colorful foam clogs appeared in 2002, just as the country was recovering from a recession. Former president George W. Bush wore them. Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler wore them.

They roared along with the economy, mocked by the fashion world but selling 100 million pairs in seven years. The snobbery was two-fold: as well as being too ugly, they were also seen as toocheap.

Victoria Beckham said she would “rather die” than wear the Crocs sent to her by Justin Bieber. “Queer Eye” style expert Tan France is equally turned off by the style. “Don’t wear Crocs … because nobody will sleep with you. If you want to remain celibate, wear Crocs,” he said in 2020.

At rail stations and shopping malls around the world, reports are popping up of people, particularly young children, getting their toes caught inescalators. The one common theme seems to be the clunky soft-soled clogs known by the name of the most popular brand, Crocs.

One of the nation's largestsubwaysystems - the Washington Metro - has even posted ads warning riders about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways. The ads feature a photo of a crocodile, though they don't mention Crocs by name.
