Dish表示食物时，指的是一顿饭中一道菜、一盘菜。

main dish意思就是主菜、主食。

dish也可以表示盛食物的盘子、碟子，但the dishes表示的是吃完饭要洗的所有餐具，包括碗盆杯等等。

例句：

This soup is substantial enough to serve as a main dish.

这汤量大到足够作为主菜。

I'll just do the dishes before we go.

我们出发前，我会洗好碗的。
