Characters(人物):emperor waitress waiter weaver A weaver B minister

official audienceA audienceB child

Preparation(道具): a chair a big glass a clothes stand

Narrator(旁白): Many years ago there lived an Emperor, who cared more for fine new clothes than for anything else. He had different clothes for every hour of the day.

Scene One

waiter: The minister has arrived!

Waitress: Majesty is in his dressing room!

waiter: Here comes the official!

Waitress: Majesty is in his dressing room!

Waiter: Two weavers have come!

Emperor: Order them to come here at once!

Weavers: Your majesty!

Emperor: What special skills do you have?

Weaver A: We can weave the most beautiful cloth.

Weaver B: The colors and designs are very fine.

Weaver A: The most interesting thing about the cloth was that clothes made of it would be invisible to anyone who was either stupid or unfit for his office.

Emperor: Hmm, those must be very good! They are just what I shall have . When I put them on , I shall be able to find out which men in my empire are unfit for their posts . Start your work at once.

Weavers: Yes, your majesty!

Narrator(旁白): So the cheat men set up two looms and pretended to be working very hard . They asked for the most beautiful silk and the best gold thread. This they kept for themselves. And then they went on with their work at the empty looms until late into the night. After some time, the Emperor wondered how the weavers were getting along with the cloth. Then he sent his old minister and an official to see it.

Scene Two

Minister: God save me! Nothing, I can see nothing!

Weaver A: Oh, it’s you, minister, come in please! Come up closer, look at it carefully!

Weaver B: Is it beautiful ?

Minister: My god! Am I stupid? Am I unfit for my post? It mustn’t be known by

anyone!

Weaver A: Are you satisfied with it?

Minister: Yes , that’s really nice! I will tell the Emperor that I like that very much ! Weavers: We are very happy! Take care, please!

Official: Hmm! I am not stupid! Maybe, I am unfit for my post, what a funny thing!

It mustn’t be known by anyone!

Weaver A: Is it nice?

Official: Nice ,nice , very nice!

WeaverB: Are you satisfied with it ?

Official: Yes, that’s really nice!

Weavers: Thanks a lot!

Narrator(旁白): All the people in the city were now talking about the wonderful cloth which the Emperor had ordered to be woven for so much money .

Scene Three

Waiter: Here comes the minister and official!

Emperor: Let them in !

Minister and official: Your majesty!

Emperor: How about the new cloth?

Minister: It will be finished soon!

Official: That’s really nice!

Minister: All the people will like it!

Emperor: Mm, great, that’s great!

Narrator(旁白): Now the Emperor wished to go himself and see the cloth while it was still on the looms. He took with him a few officials including the old minister and official who had already been there. As soon as the weavers heard the Emperor coming, they pretended to work harder than ever, though they were not weaving a single thread through the empty looms.

Minister and Official: Isn’t the cloth magnificent ? Your majesty!

Emperor: What on earth can this mean ? I don’t see anything. This is horrible! But I mustn’t let anyone know. The cloth is beautiful ! I am very pleased with it.

Officials: Beautiful ! Excellent ! Your majesty ! Have new clothes made of this

splendid cloth for the coming great procession.

Emperor: Ok,Ok!

Narrator(旁白): The Emperor tried hard to pretend to share in the pleasure of his officials and gave each of the weavers a medal.

Scene Four

Waiter: Here come the weavers!

Emperor: let them in!

Weavers: Your majesty! Here are your clothes!

Weaver A: These are the trousers.

Weaver B: This is the coat.

Minister: Only see, Your majesty, is it nice?

Officials: Wow, look, what a design! What colors!

Emperor: Really beautiful!

Weavers: Thanks, your majesty!

Minister: Hurry up, put on your new clothes, please , your majesty!

Emperor: Well, well!

Weavers: Now if you will take off your clothes , Your majesty, we will fit the new clothes on you in front of the mirror.

Emperor: Yes, yes!

Narrator(旁白): The Emperor was then undressed, and the weavers pretended to dress him in his new clothes . The Emperor turned from side to side in front of the mirror.

Officials: How beautiful the Emperor looks in his new clothes!

Emperor: Well , I’m ready for the procession

Waiter: Time for the great procession!

Audience A: Wow, how beautiful !

Audience B: Look ,what a splendid coat !

Child: But he has nothing on!

Audience A: Oh, God ,listen !A child says he has nothing on!

Audience B: But he has nothing on!

Emperor: Oh, no! but the procession must go on!

Narrator(旁白): So the Emperor held his head higher than ever. And the two officials who were following him took great trouble to pretend to hold up higher the train of the robe that wasn’t there at all.
