一次日全食发生的过程分为初亏、食既、食甚、生光、复圆等5个阶段。英语的正式术语是用很简单的方法表示的：

初亏 first contact

食既 second contact

生光 third contact

复圆 fourth contact 或 final contact

从“食既”到“生光”，英语都叫做 "totality"。

英语没有对应“食甚”的术语，要表达这个概念，可说 "middle of eclipse" 或 "greatest magnitude of eclipse"。也有人把五个阶段照意思解释为 partial eclipse begins, total eclipse begins, greatest eclipse, total eclipse ends, partial eclipse ends.

日食（solar eclipse）是没有所谓半影食（penumbral eclipse）的，因为地面观察点进入月球的半影（penumbra）就已经是初亏，进入全影（umbra）就是食既了。半影食是指月食（lunar eclipse）的时候，月球在地球的半影内，就会有半影食始（penumbral eclipse begins）和半影食终（penumbral eclipse ends）的说法。
