Ah, homewardbound I go!

Why not go home, seeing that my field

and gardens areovergrown?

Myself have mademy soul serf to my body:

why have vainregrets and mourn alone?

Fret not overbygones

and the forwardjourney take.

Only a shortdistance have I gone astray,

and I know todayI am right,

if yesterday wasa complete mistake.

Lightly floatsand drifts the boat,

and gently flowsand flaps my gown.

I inquire theroad of a wayfarer,

and sulk at thedimness of the dawn.

Then when Icatch sight of my old roofs,

joy will mysteps quicken.

Servants will bethere to bid me welcome,

and waiting atthe door are the greeting children.

Gone to seed, perhaps, are my garden paths,

but there willstill be

thechrysanthemums and the pine!

I shall lead theyoungest boy in by the hand,

and on the tablethere stands a cup full of wine!

Holding the potand cup, I give myself a drink,

happy to see inthe courtyard the hanging bough.

I lean upon thesouthern window with an immense satisfaction,

and note thatthe little place is cosy enough to walk around.

The garden growsmore familiar

and interestingwith the daily walks.

What if no oneknocks at the always closed door!

Carrying a caneI wander at peace,

and now and thenlook aloft to gaze at the blue above.

There the cloudsidle away from their mountain recesses

without anyintent or purpose,

and birds, whentired of their wandering flights,

will think ofhome.

Darkly then fallthe shadows and, ready to come home,

I yet fondle thelonely pines and loiter around.

Ah, homewardbound I go!

Let me from nowon learn to live alone!

The world and Iare not made for one another,

and why go roundlike one looking for what he has not found?

Content shall Ibe with conversations with my own kin,

and there willbe music and books

to while awaythe hours.

The farmers willcome and tell me that spring is here

and there willbe work to do at the western farm.

Some ordercovered wagons;

some row insmall boats.

Sometimes weexplore quiet, unknown ponds,

and sometimes weclimb over steep, rugged mounds.

There the trees, happy of heart, grow marvelously green,

and spring watergushes forth with a gurgling sound.

I admire howthings grow and prosper

according totheir seasons,

and feel thatthus, too, shall my life go its round.

Enough!

How long yetshall I this mortal shape keep?

Why not takelife as it comes,

and why hustleand bustle like one on an errand bound?

Wealth and powerare not my ambitions,

and unattainableis the abode of the gods!

I would go forthalone on a bright morning,

or perhaps,planting my cane,

begin to pluckthe weeds and till the ground.

Or I wouldcompose a poem beside a clear stream,

or perhaps go upto Tungkao

and make along-drawn call on top of the hill.

So would I becontent to live and die,

and withoutquestionings of the heart,

gladly acceptHeaven's will.
