For Dai people, the annual Water-Splashing Festival is the most important holiday. In this grand occasion, Dai ethnic people will wear brightly colored costumes to ring out the old and ring in the new.

对于傣族人民来说,一年一度的泼水节是最重要的节日。在这个隆重的场合,傣族人会穿上色彩艳丽的服装来辞旧迎新。

The festival lasts for three days. The first two days activities are concentrated on the banks of the Lancang River. On the first two days, a grand celebration marks the beginning of the festival. Local people will have a traditional Dai barbecue. An outdoor market is set up. where locals go for new year shopping. Artists will create sand carvings onopen space close to the market. And there is dancing! A lot of dancing! In the afternoon, a dragon boat race is held on the Lancang River.At night the banks of the river are colorfully lit, and locals float river lanterns on the river. Floating river lanterns is an old tradition in China, which is still preserved in many cities today. The practice is thought to drive bad luck away and bring good luck.

泼水节会持续三天。前两天的活动主要集中在澜沧江两岸。头两天,会有盛大的庆典来庆祝节日的开始。当地人会吃传统的傣族烧烤。还会有露天集市,当地人可以在里面采购年货。艺术家们还会在集市附近的空地上创作沙雕。还有舞蹈!很多的舞蹈!下午,人们会在澜沧江上举行龙舟比赛。晚上,江两岸灯火通明,当地人会在江上放水灯。在中国,放水灯是一个古老的传统,许多城市至今仍保留着。人们认为放水灯可以驱除坏运,带来好运。

The third day, the climax of the festival, is reserved for water splashing. On this day, the Dai people put on their newest and best clothes, then assemble at the local Buddhist temple. Afterward, a water splashing ritual begins. People will first splash the Buddha statue with clear water. This important ritual is called “Bathing the Buddha”.

第三天是节日的高潮,是泼水的日子。在这天,傣族人会穿上他们最新、最好看的衣服聚集在当地的佛寺,泼水仪式随后便开始了。人们会先用清水泼洒佛像,这一重要仪式被称为“浴佛”。

After the completion of the “Bathing the Buddha”ritual.people flock to the streets, parks or squares with pots and pans or bottles, where they uninhibitedly splash each other with water.For Dai people, water is a symbol of holiness, goodness and purity. Therefore, splashing others with water during the Water-Splashing Festival is to wish that person good luck and happiness.

“浴佛”仪式完成后,人们便拿着锅碗瓢盆或瓶子涌上街头、公园或广场,尽情地相互泼水。对于傣族人来说,水象征着神圣、美好和纯洁。所以,在泼水节期间,向别人泼水就是祝福对方吉祥如意。

通过英语阅读教学方式展现 傣族的传统节日——泼水节的来历以及泼水节的风俗等内容,透过云南傣族文化的窗口,让学生了解家乡,云南丰富多彩的地域特点和文化内涵,从而培养学生爱家乡、爱祖国的情怀,增强民族的自豪感和文化自信心。

I. Read the first chapter and fill in the chart

设计意图:

该活动培养学生利用文章标题和图片预测文章内容的能力。文章标题通常是文章的眼睛。透过标题,读者可以透视文章的主题,预测作者的行文思路,迅速把握文章的框架脉络。当学生带着预测所产生的悬念进行阅读时,文本的阅读就变成了读者和作者的互动过程。

阅读教学目标定位不应仅限于教学语言知识,还应加强文本信息梳理,通过图表的形式,可以很清楚地把文本内容按照一定的脉络梳理清楚,即节日的时间、地点、人物、活动的内容和意义。

II. Lead-in 呈现杨丽萍孔雀舞的图片

★ 问题 1:舞者是谁?她跳的是哪个人物形象?

★ 由图片引出孔雀公主这一人物形象。

★ 问题 2:孔雀公主与泼水节之间有何联系?

III. 划分文本篇章大意,理清文章的脉络结构

Part1:The looks of the demon king and the wicked behaviors he did across the whole place.

Part2:The Daipeople try to fight him but they failed.

Part3:The seven peacock princesses were caught by the demon king. They came out with several ideas to kill the demon king, however, they did not succeed.

Part4:The youngest peacock princess was so smart and brave that she got to know the secret of killing the demon king.

Part5:The demon king was killed but his head became a fire ball, the Dai people had no idea how to deal with the fire ball. The brave girls held the fire ball in turn, the Dai people splash water to cease the fire.

设计意图:

解读内容时,要围绕文本主线。此活动旨在培养学生整体感知文本的能力,同时训练学生略读的技巧,通过略读,把握文章脉络和结构,抓住文章主线。

IV. Scan the passage to find the features of characters

设计意图:

通过仔细品味文章对人物外貌、行为及性格的描述,通过图表分析对比魔王和七位美丽孔雀公主,可以 让学生形成对美与丑、善与恶的理解。尤其通过孔雀的心灵手巧、动听的歌喉及美丽的孔雀舞等侧面描写的方式来突出孔雀公主的美丽和善良。运用形容词的原级对魔王外貌描写,采用了夸张的手法,运用动词深入刻画了魔王的残酷和邪恶。文章中采用生动的细节描述,不仅能培养学生获取信息、处理信息的能力,还有理解和感知语言的魅力。

设计意图:

解读信息时,要注重思维培养。通过读后讨论,加深对文本的深入理解,培养学生的思维能力,在讨论过程中,引导学生用所学的词语、句型表达,巩固和激发学生的语言表达能力。第 3、4 个问题培养学生的发散性思维。

Answer: Water is the spring of life for the Dai people, if people throwwater at you, that means they help you to clean and wash away bad things and bringthe best wishes to you.

II. Rewrite this story. Write a drama according to your favorite scene. Try to act as these characters in a group.

Model1:

VillagerA:The demon king is coming, let’s find a safe place to hide in.

VillagerB:No, I have to wait for my wife and kids, they haven’t come back yet.

VillagerC:We have no time, the demon king is very scary and evil, he destroyed everywhere he went.

VillagerD:Yes, my bamboo house and barns were burned by the fire he set. The ripened crops were trampled by his feet. He ate many children and killed many innocent villagers.

VillagerB: I can’t go with you, I will think about ways to kill the demon king……

设计意图:

语言学习的最终目的是为了在语境中去使用它。本环节的设计主要是想通过对文本素材的学习和重要词汇、重难句的掌握,鼓励学生把所学的内容通过自己的语言组织加工,再创造,把精彩故事片段以表演的形式再现出来。
