While Cloud White paint is a decidedly warm white shade, its undertones are neutral enough to complement virtually any color palette. Many white shades are hampered by undertones that are too yellow, but that’s not the case with Benjamin Moore Cloud White. With undertones that rest in a middle ground between cool and warm, it never looks too blue or too yellow, regardless of the light exposure in a room.

Cloud White is a warm white paint color. It’s one of the most popular white shades on the market, because its undertones are soft and neutral. When looking at Cloud White on the computer screen, it certainly doesn’t look like a true white. While the naked eye can certainly pick up a yellowness to its undertones, it’s not as obvious in a room.

You may also detect a hint of green, but this doesn’t typically come out in real life unless it’s reflecting green from trees or grass outside a window. Then again, this is the case with any white shade.

All in all, Cloud White is not a true or pure white. It’s a softer white with creamy yet neutral undertones that have a subtle touch of yellow to render it a warm white, but not enough yellow to make it clash with cooler color palettes.

It is helpful to note that Cloud White paint doesn’t play well with most white furniture and virtually all white appliances. Since it is a warmer shade, it will be obvious next to the stark coolness of nearly anything else that’s white.

You’ll definitely want to avoid pairing Cloud White with a pure or true white trim. If you’re painting your walls Cloud White and want a white trim, it’s best to paint the trim in the same shade.

Benjamin Moore Cloud White paint falls on the warm side of the white paint spectrum because it has a creamy base and its undertones lean slightly yellow. However, the overall color profile of its undertones is arguably neutral.

While warm white shades can sometimes have undertones that look overly yellow, that is not a problem with Cloud White paint. Because it is a warm white, it doesn’t have the crispness that cooler whites bring to the table. Cloud White splits the difference between being too warm and icy cool.

First, here’s the “numerical” details, or the LRV:

CLOUD WHITE LRV = 87.35

It is so tricky to find the perfect white paint color for your home, more so than any other color! This is due to sneaky undertones that really show up in various lighting environments and the fact that it can reflect anything from furniture palettes to outdoor greenery.

All that said, it’s impossible to know how a white paint will react in a room until you get a swatch up on the wall.

The best way to be sure of any shade is…drumroll…to sample it! (Did you see that coming?) My recommendation for samples is using these re-usable, re-positionable, peel and stick samples that won’t damage your walls, and you can easily move around your room to see what the paint looks like on each wall ⤵

Let’s stack Cloud White up against a few other popular white paint shades to better understand its color profile, undertones, and LRV (lightness/darkness).

Simply White by Benjamin Moore is a bright, clean white with just a subtle hint of yellow undertones to give it some softness. While its name might suggest that it’s a neutral white with absolutely no undertones, it does have a bit of warmth to it.

With an LRV of 91.7, it’s brighter than Cloud White (LRV 87.35) and not quite as warm. Cloud White does have a bit more yellow in its undertones, making it a warmer shade than Simply White. Painted side by side, Simply White will look crisper and more modern.

White Dove is a widely beloved paint shade due to its versatility. It’s very neutral, landing right in the middle of stark, cool whites and yellowish, warm whites. While it does have the slightest hint of yellow undertones to make it soft and warm, it’s not quite as warm or yellow as Cloud White.

However, with an LRV of 85.38, White Dove is slightly darker than Cloud White (LRV 87.35), so when ranking by brightness, Cloud White lands right in between Simply White and White Dove.

Benjamin Moore’s White Dove is a great choice for those who are looking for a warmer, creamy white with less yellow than Cloud White.

Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore is certainly a cooler white, especially when compared to the white paint shades we’ve been discussing so far. In real life, it looks crisp and clean with subtle hints of blue and gray in its undertones.

It’s nice and bright, at 92.2 on the LRV scale, and when placed side by side with Cloud White, it’s obviously cooler and lacking any yellow whatsoever. In fact, when compared with Chantilly Lace, you can really detect the yellow undertones tucked away inside Cloud White’s color profile.
