From the murderous renaissance masterpiece of Assassin’s Creed II to the sinister swashbuckling of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Ubisoft’s most successful gaming franchise has taken us across history with mostly excellent results. With the exception of a few flops (like the failed French revolution of Assassin’s Creed Unity), the series has stamped itself as one of modern gaming’s very best, so it’s a big deal that Ubisoft has officially confirmed a roadmap for the next few Assassin’s Creed games, tracking everywhere from Japan and India to the Aztec empire.

In total, there are at least four mainline Assassin’s Creed games in development, with two more additional Assassin’s Creed titles to come. The two outliers will be a free-to-play online multiplayer game by Ubisoft Chengdu, so far with the name Project Raid, and a VR title going by the developmental name of Project Nexus.

Although it’s those four mainline games that show the most promise and demonstrate that Ubisoft still has plenty of settings to adapt to its hugely successful formula of stealth kills, strategy and open-world traversal. The developmental names for each of the games, Mirage, Codename Red, Codename Hexe, and Codename Jade don’t give us any idea of what to expect, but Ubisoft has already confirmed that there will be some major settings.

This is particularly valuable for Ubisoft Sofia, which has reportedly pitched an additional Assassin’s Creed title, Project Nebula, taking place across India, the Aztec Empire, and the Mediterranean.

“They [Ubisoft] are going all in with AC and some other major franchises,” confirmed a source to Insider Gaming, who broke the news earlier this week.

Granted, the news is premature. AAA titles (AKA, major games) now come with a developmental period of around five to six years so it’ll be a while before these forthcoming Assassin’s Creed titles hit the shelves. Although it does appear that Codename Red is the furthest along when it comes to a timeline, conceived as a bit of a spin-off with two playable characters and a large focus on stealth.
