Richard J. Walsh, beloved and devoted husband of Roberta Ward Walsh, died peacefully at his home in Naples, FL on November 2, 2021. He was a 23-year resident of Naples, with previous residences in Boston and Winchester, MA and the Burlington, VT area. Richard was born and raised in Boston, the youngest in the family of four of the late Patrick J. and Marie (Connors) Walsh. He was predeceased by his siblings, Marion C. Walsh, Rev. Stephen M. Walsh, OFM and Robert E. Walsh. Besides Roberta, he is survived by two nieces and a nephew. Richard was a proud graduate of Boston English High School, never mentioning the school’s name without recognizing its distinction as “America’s first public high school.” Throughout his life, he aspired to and fulfilled the promise of becoming a graduate of “honor and distinction,” the English High School mission since its inception in 1821. Following military service with the Seventh Army Headquarters in Germany, Richard enrolled at Suffolk University, majoring in history and government, transitioning to admission at Suffolk Law School. Fellow classmates still recall his leadership in organizing a study group that endured through both degree programs, forming lifelong friendships as a result. As a proud and loyal alumnus, he maintained contact with the Law School, and in 2018 was named to the Dean’s Council. Richard had a keen interest in politics that led him to becoming active state and local elections at a young age. He was often referred to as “the boy orator,” as he introduced state and local office seekers along campaign stops. He served as a delegate to his party’s state convention, helping craft strategies and policy platforms, anticipating a career in politics. Upon completion of his law degree and admission to the bar, Richard’s interests shifted to public service. He worked first with the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington DC, then the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at both the New York and Boston Regional Offices, conducting casework in antitrust and consumer protection law as well as managing a number of major projects. It was at the FTC where he and Roberta met, marrying in 1974. Later, Richard established and directed a statewide mediation-arbitration program in Vermont shortly after he and Roberta relocated there in the early 1980’s. In the early 90’s, they were able to spend a year living in Edinburgh, Scotland, their base for travels throughout the U.K., where Richard enthusiastically reinforced his knowledge of British history—frayed and thumbworn college textbook in hand. Eventually, his retirement drew the couple to Naples where Richard pursued his passion for the game of golf. The Walshes also embarked upon extensive travels abroad, especially enjoying visits to major cities in Europe. They spent summers in Vermont, always with a West Highland Terrier in tow. Richard will be remembered among friends and family members alike as one who warmly welcomed everyone in his presence, whether as a guest in his home, part of a foursome on the golf course, in the workplace or as a neighbor. His quick wit and sense of humor, gentlemanly demeanor and generosity have been meaningful and lasting to many over the years. Appreciation is extended to Richard’s health care providers and caregivers, all of whom guided him through multiple health challenges in recent years. As well, the assistance of Avow Hospice is gratefully acknowledged. A brief service of remembrance will be held on Monday, November 8, 2021 at 10:00 a.m with Service at 11:00 a.m. at Fuller Funeral Home - East. Interment will take place at a later date at the Walsh Family plot in the Boston area. Donations in his memory may be made to one’s local humane society or wildlife protection organization. Alternatively, helping a friend or stranger with an act of kindness will be a fitting tribute to his memory.
