Artorias of the Abyss is additional content for the game Dark Souls. It was originally released for PC as part of the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, and later for consoles as the eponymous DLC. A console version of the Prepare to Die Edition was also released at a later date. The DLC content is also automatically available in the Dark Souls Remastered Editions.

The player must first travel to Darkroot Basin, defeat the Hydra, then defeat the Golden Crystal Golem further in to free Dusk of Oolacile. From there, the player must acquire the Broken Pendant from The Duke's Archives. After acquiring the pendant, a floating dark rift will appear in Darkroot Basin close to where the Gold Golem was encountered, at the very rear of the area. Upon inspection, the player will be transported to Oolacile.

Plot[]

While everything about Artorias of the Abyss is technically optional, the main storyline consists of the Chosen Undead taking the place of Knight Artorias, rescuing Dusk of Oolacile and killing Manus, Father of the Abyss.

Lore[]

Artorias of the Abyss takes place approximately 200 to 300 years before the events of Dark Souls, in the land of Oolacile.[note 1] It features three of the Four Knights of Gwyn‎. The events of the DLC are also related to the story of Dark Souls II, as Nashandra was born from a fragment of Manus' soul.

Dark Souls heavily references Berserk in many ways, with Artorias himself being an homage to the manga's main protagonist Guts. Notes[] ↑ During an interview, Namco Bandai's Daisuke Uchiyama stated that the game takes place 200-300 years in the past ([1] [2]), but this is not specifically mentioned anywhere in-game.
