1000多年前，诗仙李白酒隐安陆期间，慕名寻访位于今应城市汤池镇的“玉女汤”，留下了“神女殁幽境，汤池流大川。阴阳结炎炭，造化开灵泉”的绝句。

More than 1000 years ago, during his seclusion in Anlu, Hubei Province, the poetic genius Li Bai left famous verses after paying a visit to Yunv Spring in today's Tangchi Town, Yingcheng City, which says: A Fairy went to her eternal rest in this serene scenic, which turns into hot spring and flows forever. Intense collision between Yin and Yang is like a raging charcoal fire, creating the spring with a supernatural power.

李白没有想到的是，在千年之后，汤池不仅流入大川，还流入了甲鱼池，成就了“楚天甲鱼第一镇”。

Unbeknownst to Li Bai was that thousand of years later, the same spring in his verses now not only flows into major rivers, but also flows into a turtle pond, bringing fame to the town known as “the No.1 Turtle Breeding Town in Hubei”.

不久前，湖北省发改委公布《2023年度湖北特色小镇创建名单》，汤池镇靠着温泉和甲鱼，捧回了“灵甲小镇”的金字招牌。

Not long ago, the Hubei Provincial Development and Reform Commission released the “2023 Hubei Characteristic Town List”. Owing to its hot springs and Chinese softshell turtles, Tangchi Town once again earned the golden title of “Lingjia Town” (meaning high-quality softshelled turtles in Chinese).

正是乍暖还寒的时候。3月12日，一场大风，把持续攀升的气温暂停了下来。恰逢周末，应城的汤池温泉，又迎来了一拨“泡澡客”。

In the early spring of March when the coldness and warmth alternated, a strong wind halted the rising temperature on March 12th, which happened to be the weekend. As a result, numerous tourists were drawn to Tangchi Hot Spring in Yingcheng.

“气温越来越高，再不泡又得等年底了。”孝感的吴女士，几乎每年都要到汤池来几次，抢在夏天的脚步前，她又带着孩子来到了汤池。

“It will get warmer soon. If we don't visit the hot spring now, we will have to wait until the end of this year.” Mrs.Wu from Xiaogan said. Almost every year, she pays several visits to Tangchi Town. This time, she brought her child to the hot spring just in time before summer arrives.

汤池温泉享有“亚洲名泉”的盛誉，又名玉女汤、玉女温泉。镇里的工作人员对汤池的历史娓娓道来：南朝文学家盛弘之曾撰著《荆州记》：“温泉冬月未至，数里遥望，白气浮蒸如烟，上下采映，状若绮疏；又有车轮形如双桂，世传昔有玉女，乘车自投此泉……”

The hot spring in Tangchi Town has been crowned as the “Famous Spring in Asia” and it is also known as Yunv Soup and Yunv Hot Spring. The staff in the town vividly introduced the history of Tangchi: “Sheng Hongzhi, a great litterateur in Southern Dynasty (420-589) wrote about this spring in his The Introduction to Jingzhou: Taking a distant look at the spring before the freezing winter, I can see the water vapor is as ethereal as the white smoke, floating in the air, like a wooden window with hollow patterns. Sometimes, the water vapor changes its form into a wagon wheel, which is similar to a flourishing osmanthus tree. It's told by the common that, once there was a fair lady who came in a carriage to drown in the spring.”

而诗仙李白，就是看了《荆州记》后，特地来此寻访，留下诗篇佳句，也让“汤池”二字名噪千年。

After reading The Introduction to Jingzhou ,the poetic genius Li Bai (701—762) specially paid a visit to this town. His touching verses and inspiring lines have made “Tangchi” popular throughout a thousand years' time.

据介绍，汤池温泉日出水量达10400吨，出水温度为72℃—79℃之间，平均每吨水矿物质含量35千克之多，温泉中不仅富含“矿泉之精”氡元素，还含有48种对人体有益的矿物质和微量元素。

According to reports, Tianchi Hot Spring yields 10,400 tons of water per day. The water temperature is between 72℃ and 79℃ and the average mineral content of water is 35 kg per ton. The hot spring is not only rich in radon, the “essence of mineral spring”, but also contains 48 kinds of minerals and trace elements which are beneficial to the human body.

如今，整个度假村内拥有128个原汤特色泡池。与其他温泉不同，景区内层峦叠嶂，大型植被、生态湖、生态鸟岛、阁亭连廊等观光胜景掩映其间。人在汤中泡，鸟在头顶鸣，好不惬意。

Today, there are 128 original spring pools in the resort. Different from other hot springs, the scenic spot is covered with mountains, vegetation, ecological lakes, ecological bird islands, pavilions and other wonderful sceneries. Bathing in the hot spring, with birds singing overhead is nothing short of a cozy day!

幽深的美景，再也见不到当年戏水的神女，唯见喷涌的汤池，流入滚滚的平川。但8s一股喷涌的泉，带来的远不止这些。

In the tranquil scenery, we will never see fairies again, but the gushing spring rushing to wide plain. However, with an 8-second spray interval, what the spring brings us is far beyond just that.

得益于温泉旅游的发展，整个汤池镇区建筑错落有致，整齐划一。2021年底，汤池镇启动功能镇区建设，集纳居民意见，修建了景润河文体广场、运动球场等。

Thanks to the development of hot spring tourism, the buildings in Tangchi Town are well-distributed and neat. By the end of 2021, Tangchi Town started the construction of a functional zone, collected residents' opinions, and built Jingrunhe Sports Square and sports court.

而作为一个小镇，镇上各种餐馆、酒店随处可见。“汤池温泉生意火，我们也跟着沾光。冬天一到周末，餐馆就十分繁忙。而超市、洗车、泳衣之类的商贸服务行业也都一一带动起来。”镇上一家餐馆的老板介绍。

Even as a small town, it boasts multiple restaurants and hotels. “The hot spring tourism is thriving, and we benefit from it, too. On weekends during winter, restaurants are busy. Commercial services such as supermarkets, car washes and swimsuits also take off.” introduced the owner of a restaurant in town.

数据显示，2021年，汤池镇旅游综合收入突破3.1亿元，占全镇经济总量的75%，带动周边农民近3000人就业，成为乡村振兴、农民致富增收的重要手段。

Data shows that, in 2021, Tangchi Town's comprehensive tourism income exceeded 310 million yuan, accounting for 75% of the town's total economic output, providing nearly 3,000 jobs to farmers nearby. The tourism has become an important means of rural revitalization, a good way for farmers to get rich and increase income.

温泉水养好一只只甲鱼

Hot Spring Facilitates Softshell Turtle Breeding

3月14日，应城市汤池镇洪河村的唐余庆，又来到了村里的汤池甲鱼现代产业园，再过一段时间，产业园就可以投苗生产了。

On March 14th, Tang Yuqing, a villager from Honghe Village, Tangchi Town, Yingcheng City, visted the Tangchi Modern Industrial Park of Chinese Softshell Turtles in the village before personally embarking on turtle farming.

说到汤池，最出名的要数温泉。其次，就是甲鱼。

While the hot spring is the most famous attraction in Tangchi Town the second is Chinese softshell turtles.

据老唐回忆，汤池镇真正开始进行甲鱼养殖，是在上世纪八九十年代。

Mr. Tang recalled that it was in the 1980s or 1990s that Tangchi Town started culturing Chinese softshell turtles for the very first time.

汤池温泉的水量很大，在还没有进行旅游开发的年代，利用温泉水进行养殖，成为研究的课题，应城市汤池地热水产实验室应运而生。

Before tourism developed, Tangchi hot spring, due to its large amount of water, was a possible choice for turtle breeding when people started breeding aquatics. Since how to best use the hot spring became a topic of interest, the Yingcheng Tangchi Geothermal Aquatics Laboratory was set up.

甲鱼生长需要的水温较高，水温一低就会停止生长。而用温泉水养殖，则可以解决水温过低的问题，让甲鱼持续生长。在实验的过程中，人们发现，用汤池的温泉水养出的甲鱼，肉质鲜嫩，营养丰富。应城市汤池地热水产实验室成了中华鳖养殖总场。

Relatively high water temperatures are required for the turtles' healthy growth, while low water temperatures will halt growth. The hot spring thus offers a solution for the sustainable growth of the turtles. It has been found during experiments that turtles bred in Tangchi hot spring have tender meat and are richer in nutrition, making Yingcheng Tangchi Geothermal Aquatics Laboratory the top in Chinese softshell turtle breeding.

1988年，汤池镇农民陈毛智，引来温泉水，在自家池塘探索甲鱼人工养殖。当时，甲鱼在市场上被称为“软黄金”，售价高达每斤220元，一颗甲鱼蛋就卖到了28元。陈毛智并不吝啬，只要村民来学，他就把自己摸索的技术无偿提供。跟着陈毛智养甲鱼的人越来越多，汤池甲鱼养殖面积逐渐扩大，在市场上也有了一定名气。唐余庆也在这个时候，开始养殖甲鱼。

In 1988, Chen Maozhi, a farmer in Tangchi Town, introduced hot spring water into his own pool for trial artificial turtle farming. At that time, Chinese softshell turtle was regarded as “soft gold” on the market, selling for as much as 220 yuan per half kilo, and a turtle egg was sold at 28 yuan. Chen Maizhi was generous to teach whoever wanted to learn his technique for free. With more people learning from Chen Maozhi and more areas being used for turtle farming in Tangchi, Tangchi Chinese softshell turtle gained popularity on the market. It is at this time that Tang Yuqing started turtle farming.

“一般的甲鱼一年生长期只有七八个月，常规养殖一年长1斤。而用温泉水养殖后，甲鱼生长快，有的1年就能长4斤。”唐余庆说，但是生长快了、养殖户多了，甲鱼价格必然随之下降。在30多年的养殖生涯中，唐余庆经历了甲鱼从最高200多元一斤的“天价”，到最低9.5元的“白菜价”。

Tang Yuqing said: “The average growing period for a turtle is seven or eight months in a year, with an annual weight gain of half a kilo, if not bred in hot spring water. But turtles bred in hot spring water grow faster with an annual weight gain of 2 kilos.” However, the price of turtles will naturally decrease due to its shorter growing period and increasing number of turtle farmers. During the 30 years of his turtle farming career, Tang Yuqing has experienced a large price fluctuation of turtles, from the highest being over 200 yuan per half a kilo to lowest ever at 9.5 yuan.

从1996年开始，随着人工养殖的发展，全国甲鱼市场价格大幅下滑，市场价格与养殖成本倒挂，不少养殖户的利润积累都亏空殆尽。

Since 1996, with the development of artificial farming, the whole turtle market experienced a sharp drop in selling price. Many farmers ran out of their accumulated profits because the market price was lower than the cost of farming.

汤池人开始谋求变化，抱团闯市场。陈毛智牵头组建汤池甲鱼养殖协会，唐余庆、杨义平等养殖大户积极响应，加入协会。在镇党委支持下，协会成员分别成立7个专业合作社，共享养殖技术、服务、销路等，一起抱团做强产业。

The Tangchi residents thus began to seek changes and do business in joint hands. Chen Maozhi took a lead in establishing Tangchi Turtle Farming Association. Tang Yuqing, Yang Yiping and other farmers with large-scale production responded actively and joined the association. Under the support of the Tangchi Town Party Committee, the members of association have respectively established 7 professional cooperatives. By doing so, they can share resources and information, including farming technology, service and sales channels, so as to work together to develop and strengthen the industry.

合作社每年聘请技术专家指导强化种苗提纯复壮工作，确保甲鱼品质纯正。各合作社带头人组建“土专家”技术攻关小组，打破单纯依赖温泉水养殖的局限，逐步摸索出锅炉供热温棚饲养技术，同时推行虾鳖、鱼鳖混养，稻鳖共生生态养殖新模式，将甲鱼养殖推广至普通农户。

The cooperatives invite experts every year to guide them on the purification of seedlings to ensure the pure quality of turtles. Leaders in each cooperative gather local experts as a technical group, which aims to gradually explore breeding turtles in a boiler heated shed instead of only depending on hot spring water. The technical group also promotes polyculture, such as farming shrimp and turtle or fish and turtle together, as well as a new ecological farming system in which crops and turtles can coexist, so that even an ordinary farmer can start turtle farming.

为扩大甲鱼销路，各合作社与湖北柒味食品集团合作，共同研发卤制甲鱼、甲鱼汤、甲鱼粉等产品，延伸产业链，提高附加值。

In order to expand market for turtles, the cooperatives have cooperated with Hubei Qiwei Food Group to jointly manufacture and launch products, such as pot-stewed turtles, turtle soup and turtle noodles. By doing so, it will not only extend the industrial chain, but also increase the added value of turtles.

2015年，应城汤池甲鱼被国家工商总局授予国家地理标志产品称号。汤池甲鱼产业不断壮大，如今年产量2000万斤，被称为“楚天甲鱼第一镇”，名号越叫越响。

In 2015, softshell turtles bred in hot springs in Yingcheng City were awarded the title of National Geographical Indication Products by the State Administration for Industry and Commerce. The turtle industry continues to develop and expand, with the annual output of 10,000 tons. Meanwhile, Tangchi Town, known as the No.1 Turtle Breeding Town in Hubei, is becoming ever more popular.

灵泉与甲鱼携手特色产业

A Speciality Industry Integrating Hot Springs and Soft-shelled Turtles

经过30多年的发展，随着养殖技术不断成熟，汤池甲鱼的养殖规模逐渐扩大。

After more than thirty years of development, the breeding scale of softshelled turtles in hot springs has expanded thanks to the increasingly sophisticated techniques.

汤池甲鱼主要销往武汉及北京、湖南等省市，占据着湖北省甲鱼市场重要地位。2021年以来，甲鱼市场行情持续向好，汤池甲鱼供不应求。

These turtles are mainly sold to Wuhan, Beijing, Hunan and other provinces, occupying an important position in the market of Hubei Province. Since 2021, turtle market has been advancing as manifested by the fact that the demand exceeds supply.

该镇纪委书记徐华峰介绍，目前汤池镇各类甲鱼养殖面积达到5000亩左右，其中，温室甲鱼近30万平方米，常温甲鱼约4500亩，甲鱼年产量2000万斤，年产值近4亿元，产业从业人员近1000人。甲鱼产业已发展成为汤池的农业支柱产业，乃至应城的农业特色产业。

Xu Huafeng, secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection in Tangchi Town, said that the turtle breeding area has amounted to about 333 hectares, including nearly 300,000 square meters of greenhouse turtle ponds, 300 hectares of room-temperature turtle ponds, with an annual output of 10,000 tons and an annual output value of nearly 400 million yuan. It has also provided about 1000 jobs. Now, the turtle industry has grown into the pillar agriculture industry of Tangchi Town, and even the speciality industry of Yingcheng City.

而汤池镇政府也大力扶持甲鱼养殖产业，为进一步擦亮品牌，汤池镇政府决定在优势基础上参照工业产业集约发展模式，建设集规模化养殖、销售、品牌打造等元素于一体的现代化甲鱼产业园。

The government of Tangchi Town also supports the turtle breeding industry. In order to further promote brand competitiveness, the government, inspired by the intensive development model of industry, intends to build a modern turtle industrial park integrating large-scale breeding, sales and brand promotion on the basis of its original advantages. 

去年1月，汤池镇在甲鱼养殖扎堆的洪河、方集两村，依托原汤池中华鳖良种场旧址建设现代产业园，配套道路、水电路、绿化、污水处理等基础设施。产业园占地面积约620亩，总投资2.5亿元。

In January last year, Tangchi Town began to build a modern industrial park in Honghe Village and Fangji Village with a successful experience in turtle breeding on the site of the former Tangchi turtle breeding farm, which was equipped with infrastructure, such as roads, water circuits, trees and sewage treatment plants. The industrial park covers an area of about 620 mu with a total investment of 250 million yuan.

近日，极目新闻记者在该产业园看到，产业园的骨架已经建好。唐余庆是产业园的大养殖户，据他介绍，产业园最大的特点就是“池里养鱼，池上光伏”，覆盖的光伏板产生的能源，可以用于对池内养殖水进行加温。“甲鱼入园，不仅能规避用地、排污、养殖病害等经营风险，还能让养殖户抱团经营，发挥节约成本、打造品牌的强大优势。”

Recently, Jimu news reporters found that the building of this industrial park was well underway. Tang Yuqing, a turtle farmer in the industrial park, said that the most distinct feature of the industrial park is “fish farming in the pond, photovoltaic panels over the pond”. The energy generated by the photovoltaic panels covering the water can be used to heat the water in the pond. “Putting these turtles into the park can not only avoid business risks, including land contamination, sewage discharge, breeding diseases, but also enable farmers to cooperate for cost saving and brand promotion.”

唐余庆算了一笔账：园区建好后，除去甲鱼温棚、饲养池等建设投资费用，按目前平均市场价格，每亩收益近30万元。

Tang Yuqing estimated that after the park is completed, the income per mu will be nearly 300,000 yuan according to the current average market price, excluding the investment costs such as the turtle warming shed and feeding pond.

在汤池，这个被称为“灵甲”的小镇，甲鱼产业仅仅是乡镇实力产业的一个缩影。作为全国“一村一品”先进乡镇，以温泉和甲鱼为主导，全镇特色产业实现多元化健康发展，乡村旅游、太空莲、苗木花卉、精品桃、荸荠种植，村村有产业。

In Tangchi Town, also known as the No. 1 turtle breeding town, the turtle industry is just a small part of the competitive township industries. As an advanced town with hot springs and soft-shelled turtles, this town has realized diversified and sound development of speciality industries. Every village has its own industry, such as rural tourism, space lotus, seedlings and flowers, high-grade peaches and water chestnut cultivation.

灵泉和甲鱼在这里相逢，美丽乡镇的蓝图缓缓展开。
