Line 是一个意思非常丰富的单词，不亚于介词 with 的意思，但它却以孤零零的“线”的意思残留在人的大脑里，真是大材小用啊。在我们大刀阔斧地谈论要如何增加词汇量时，往往忘记了每个单词本身的详细用法，有的时候彻底掌握一个单词比记忆好几十个单词来得强。

Line 常用作名词，它经常与介词 in 合作，而且合作方式较多，且都是以 in 打头的，常见有以下合作方式。

一、in line with

In line with 是 in 和 line 最常见的组合，意为“符合；（与…）一致；（与…）相符”，相当于 in agreement with 或 in accordance with 等，例如：

Annual pay increases will be in line with inflation.

每年加薪幅度将与通货膨胀挂钩。

The company's results are in line with stock market expectations.

该公司的业绩符合股市预期。

We need to know whether the candidate has beliefs in line with our values.

我们需要知道候选人的信念是否与我们的价值观一致。

此时对应的反义词是 out of line with，意为“与…不同（或不一致）；不符合”，例如：

London prices are way out of line with the rest of the country.

伦敦的物价与英国其他地方存在着很大的差异。

You can disagree with her, but calling her dishonest was out of line.

你可以不同意她的意见，但说她不诚实是不合适的。

当表示“成一直线”等时，用 in (a) line with sth，对应的是 out of line with，例如：

An eclipse happens when the earth and moon are in line with the sun.

地球和月亮与太阳处在一条直线上，日食就发生了。

The two small points on the screen will soon be out of line with the bigger one.

屏幕上的两个小点很快就会与较大的点不在一条直线上。

二、in line for sth

In line for sth，意为“有可能获得某物”，不要理解为“准备”，它的意思相当于 likely to get sth，例如：

I’m in line for a promotion.

我有可能升职。

Robinson made it very clear that his daughter is in line for the job should he retire or pass away.

罗宾逊非常明确地表示，万一他退休或去世，他的女儿有可能担任这项工作。

三、in the line of duty

In the line of duty，是一个固定搭配，意为“在执行任务时；在履行职责时”，相当于 while doing sth 或 in the act of doing sth，例如：

A policeman was injured in the line of duty yesterday.

昨天有一名警察在执行公务时受伤。

Firefighters are constantly risking their lives in the line of duty.

消防员在执行任务时经常冒着生命危险。

总结一下，与 in 的组合中，在表示“（与…）一致或符合”时，常见的有以下几种表示方式，你会几个呢？
