The AMD Ryzen 3 1200 (not to be confused with the E1-1200 from 2012) is a quad-core desktop processor with no SMT support (4 threads only). As of mid-2017, the Ryzen 3 is the slowest quad-core desktop Ryzen CPU.

Performance

This is a fairly slow CPU that fails to outgun Intel Core i5-10310U and Core i7-8550U in multi-thread benchmarks, both laptop-grade CPUs with typical energy consumption figures south of 30 W.

The TDP is specified at 65 Watt and the CPU cores are clocked at up to 3.45 GHz (XFR for 2 cores, 3.4 GHz without XFR). In-depth review can be found here.

 

 

Intel Core i3-1215U ► remove from comparison

The Intel Core i3-1215U is a mid-range mobile CPU for thin and light laptops based on the Alder Lake architecture. It was announced in early 2022 and offers 2 performance cores (P-cores, Golden Cove architecture) and 4 efficient cores (E-cores, Gracemont architecture). The P-cores support Hyper-Threading leading to 8 supported threads when combined with the E-cores. The clock rate ranges from 1.2 to 4.4 GHz on the performance cluster and 0.9 to 3.3 GHz on the efficient cluster. The performance of the E-cores should be similar to old Skylake cores (compare to the Core i7-6700HQ). All cores can use up to 10 MB L3-cache. Compared to the faster i5 and i7 models, the i3 does not include vPro features.

Performance

Thanks to the 6 cores, the multi-threaded performance should be clearly faster than the older dual-core Tiger Lake CPUs with 15 Watt (like the Intel Core i3-1115G4). The sustained performance will be limited by the TDP setting and thermals and therefore only short term loads. Thanks to the architectural improvements of the big Golden Cove cores, the single thread performance should be better than similar clocked Tiger Lake CPUs.

Features

The integrated memory controller supports various memory types up to DDR5-4800, DDR4-3200, LPDDR5-5200, and LPDDR4x-4267. The Thread Director (in hardware) can support the operating system to decide which thread to use on the performance or efficient cores for the best performance. For AI tasks, the CPU also integrates GNA 3.0 and DL Boost (via AVX2). Quick Sync in version 8 is the same as in the Rocket Lake CPUs and supports MPEG-2, AVC, VC-1 decode, JPEG, VP8 decode, VP9, HEVC, and AV1 decode in hardware. The CPU only supports PCIe 4.0 (x8 for a GPU and two x4 for SSDs).

The integrated graphics card is based on the Xe-architecture and offers 64 of the 96 EUs (Execution Units) operating at up to 1.1 GHz.

The CPU is rated at 15 W base power (TDP, PL1) and 55 W max. Turbo power (PL2) and the whole SoC is manufactured in a 10nm process at Intel, which is known as Intel 7.

Intel Core i3-1005G1 ► remove from comparison

The Intel Core i3-1005G1 is a power efficient dual-core SoC for laptops and Ultrabooks based on the Ice Lake-U generation that was announced in Mai 2019 (Computex). It integrates two Sunnycove processor cores (4 threads thanks to HyperThreading) clocked at 1.2 (base) - 3.4 GHz (single and dual core Turbo). According to Intel the Sunnycove cores achieve 18% more IPCs (Instructions per Clock).

Other improvements for Ice Lake are the AI hardware acceleration and the partial integration of Thunderbolt and Wifi 6 in the chip. The integrated DDR4 memory controller supports modules with up to 3200 MHz (and LPDDDR4 3733).

Performance

The average 1005G1 in our database is a disappointment, its multi-thread benchmark scores only matching those of Intel Core i5-7267U and AMD Ryzen 3 2300U. This is unfortunately in line with what we've been seeing from most other Ice Lake family processors. While not as slow as an Intel Celeron, a Core i3-1005G1 will still look out of place in anything but entry-level laptops and mini-PCs.

The biggest improvement for Ice-Lake is the integrated Gen 11 graphics processor called UHD Graphics G1. The Core i3-1005G1 integrates the smallest GPU, the UHD Graphics with 32 of the 64 EUs clocked at 300 - 900 MHz. The higher-end Iris Plus G4 and G7 offer higher clock speeds (up to 1100 MHz) and up to 64 EUs.

Power consumption

The Core i3 has a 15 W default TDP (also known as the long-term power limit), a value that laptop manufacturers are allowed to reduce slightly - 13 W being the lower limit - resulting in lower clock speeds and lower performance. Either way, that's a tad too high to allow for passively cooled designs.

The dual-core Intel CPU is built with Intel's first-gen 10 nm process for average, as of late 2022, energy efficiency.
