像飞行员一样说话，必须了解和记忆一些三个字母的缩写。这些缩写很多起源于摩斯代码时代，需要越简洁越好。因此基本上飞行员与地面的通话常包含缩写，例如 QNH (海平面气压)，POB (机上人员)， VMC (目视气象条件)，以及无数个其他缩写形式。航空英语当然不全是缩写形式;以下是部分航空词汇，如果你无意中接收到一个本地停机场的无线电频道，那就可能会听到这些词汇。

Affirm 是的

发音为“AY-firm”，意思为 yes。No 则是 negative。

Approach 近进

当飞机降低高度准备着陆时，称为 approach “近进”。而在“近进”的'最后阶段，称为“final approach”。在即将降落的最后一步，飞行员会汇报自己的位置为“short final”。

Circuit(起落)航线

飞行器通常会遵行一个固定的起落航线，称为circuit。这能够让空中交通保持秩序，给飞行员足够时间做降落前的最后准备。通常这一过程包含顺风飞行于一千英尺的高度，与降落跑道平行但方向相反;随后转入于跑道垂直的90度的方向，于跑道的左侧或是右侧。这样的降落分别“lefthand / righthand circuit”。如果飞机不做起落航线，直接朝向跑道降落方向，则称为“straight-in approach”直接进近。

Mayday 最高紧急情况

这是有生命危险的紧急情况下的警报型号，也用于航海对话中，例如发动机完全失去动力。这个表述来自于法语 m’aidez，意思为“help me”。或者是m’aider 或venez m’aider (“come and help me”)的缩写。在无线电呼叫中你可以连续大喊三遍 mayday。

Overhead 正上空

指的是一块空域或机场的正上方位置。当飞机通过一个空域，或者做降落之前的步骤进入降落航线时，飞行员会被要求“report overhead”。而飞行员可能也会要求“route through your overhead”，这表示他们想要飞过机场空域，沿其路线飞往他处。

Pan-pan 紧急情况

Squawk 应答机
