GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It’s that time of year in Michigan when the days feel long, the temperatures are bitter, and the sky is drab 24/7.

As the weekend approaches, we’re all looking for a reason to get out of the house and have some fun with our friends or family.

To cure your winter blues, here are five events you can check out in Grand Rapids this weekend, Jan. 20-22. Heads up: The last one is especially great for those missing the warm summer weather.

1. The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters are bringing their wild antics to Van Andel Arena.

There will be lots of rim-rattling dunks, side-splitting comedy and ball-handling wizardry going on in downtown Grand Rapids this weekend.

The iconic Harlem Globetrotters will go head-to-head against the Washington Generals at Van Andel Arena at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22.

The Globetrotters welcome fans in the Grand Rapids area to join them for an interactive gameday packed with one-of-a-kind premium offerings.

The team are pioneers in popularizing the slam dunk, the fast break, the forward and point guard positions, and the figure-eight weave. In 2010, the Globetrotters also introduced the first-ever 4-point shot, a shot located 30 feet from the basket – almost 7 feet beyond the NBA’s three-point arc.

Ticket prices start at $63 each, according to the Van Andel website. You can buy them here.

2. Axe your bad habits and welcome in the New Year with this fun and cathartic event.

A local axe-throwing venue is hosting a fun event this month where attendees can “axe out” their bad habits and embrace new beginnings in 2023.

Throughout the month of January, all guests who book a session at FlannelJax’s Grand Rapids will be able to write down bad habits they want to get rid of in the new year, tape it to the wall, and throw an axe at it as a catalyst to remove the habit from their lives.

The venue, located at 601 Lake Michigan Dr., has several sessions available to book this weekend. For $40, a group of four people can have access to the axe-throwing space for two hours along with a dedicated coach who will be available to help.

The month-long event runs through Jan. 29. Session availability can be found linked HERE.

3. Andrea Bocelli says this violinist performing in Grand Rapids this weekend will “leave you breathless.”

Violinist Caroline Campbell will perform with the Grand Rapids Symphony this weekend in a classical/pops crossover performance that you won’t want to miss.

From the Los Angeles Philharmonic to Kennedy Center, to the Sydney Opera House, Campbell has partnered onstage with the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Adam Levine, Michael Bublé and David Foster, according to the Grand Rapids Symphony’s website.

Bocelli, a world-famous Italian tenor, said of Campbell, “She is a fair-haired angel with a bow who, when on stage, has such grit and musicality as to leave you breathless.”

Attendees of this show will hear Bizet’s Fantasy Carmen, “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic, the love themes from The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet, “Amazing Grace,” and much more. Bob Bernhardt is conducting the show.

Ticket prices start at $18. There will be a 7:30 p.m. show on Friday, Jan. 20, and a 7:30 p.m. show on Saturday, Jan. 21.

4. A piano made of ice will be the feature performance of the World of Winter festival this weekend.

Have you ever seen someone perform on a piano made of ice?

The ongoing World of Winter festival will bring just that to downtown Grand Rapids this weekend.

The free concert will be held on the Grand Rapids Public Museum’s back lawn, in front of a tree leading up to the Blue Bridge.

There will be 6:30 p.m. performances on both Friday and Saturday. Friday’s performer will be Hannah Laine, while Saturday’s performer is still TBA, according to the event’s Facebook page.

This installation is in partnership with the Ice Brigade and is one of many events happening as part of the 2023 World of Winter Festival. You can fine more information here.

5. Pretend its summertime with this warm, tropical event at Harmony Brewing.

Around this time of year, most Michiganders are missing the heat after months of chilly winter weather.
