(Absolute Phrase)

I stopped believing in Santa Claus when my mother took me to see him in a department store, and he asked for my autograph.

I saw John eating his dinner. The bus has gone.

Legs quivering, our old dog Gizmo dreamed of chasing squirrels.

Her arms folded across her chest, Professor Hill warned the class about the penalties of plagiarism.

The family devoured Aunt Lenora's carrot cake, their fingers scraping the leftover frosting from the plates.

The batter mixed, Sally was ready to bake her muffins.

Muffins baked, it was time for the brunch to begin.

The season nearly finished, Rebecca Lobo and Sophie Witherspoon emerged as true leaders.

Their reputation as winners secured by victory, the New York Liberty charged into the semifinals.

Her mixer mixing the batter, Sally could soon add blueberries.

Sally prepared the tables for brunch, her muffins baking in the oven.

The two superstars signed autographs into the night, their faces beaming happily.

Time permitting, we can have a gathering.

A wonderful baker, Sally made fresh muffins for her friends.

Your best friends, where are they now, when you need them?

And then there was my best friend Sally — the dear girl — who has certainly fallen on hard times.

Last night, Sally made fresh muffins for her friends.

The first is called an open conditional, from the expression "an open possibility."

His subordinates, their faces sweat-streaked and smudged with ash, leaned heavily against the firetruck.

Coach Nykesha strolled onto the court, her arms akimbo and a large silver whistle clenched between her teeth.

The new recruits stood in one corner of the gym, their uniforms stiff and ill fitting, their faces betraying their anxiety.
