The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said that the Lifesaver medical helicopter crashed near Bear Creek Road (County Road 43) and Mountain Oaks Drive.

The helicopter was responding to a hiker in the area who was experiencing breathing problems.

Then the sheriff's office received a call that an aircraft was down shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Deputies were already in the area assisting the hiker. When they arrived at the crash scene, the helicopter was on fire. They assisted those on board the helicopter until medical rescue crews arrived.

One member of the flight crew was pronounced dead at the scene. A second crew member died at the hospital. A third flight crew member is in the hospital and listed in critical condition.

The road remained closed Monday morning and is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. Officials are asking everyone to stay away from that area.

The cause of the crash will be investigated by the NTSB.
