中文：叫作“连字符”，连接号之一，详细用法见GB/T 15834—2011 4.13.3.1节。

英文：hyphen。

1）“-”用于将两个或多个单词（和数字）连接成一个概念，特别是用于构建形容词。

复合词state-of-the-art，step-by-step可以作为形容词使用，如果去掉这些横线，前者是名词性短语，后者则类似介词短语。

2）用于人名，例如Christopher Fang-Yen, Mrs. Skinner-Kcrycek，极为常见。

3）是21~99这些数字的一个必要组成部分，比如twenty-three。

4）英文单词断词转行时，在断开处（行尾）加“-”。

《中国日报》中单词的转行按照音节或构词断开，十分规范。

很多中文出版物，包括科技期刊，会涉及中文英文夹用的情况，其中的单词转行有专用行业标准（CY/T 154—2017第9节）可以参照。

稍长的“‒”

中文：标点符号中没有对应的用法。

英文：en dash，用法多样。英文中使用“–”时前后都不留空格。键盘上输入“Ctrl+减号”或“Alt+‘0150’”可显示此符号（Windows系统，必须用小键盘上的减号键或数字键）。（示例中蓝色横线为连字符。）

1）标示数值范围，从…至…。

• Compared with the photodetectors (PDs) made of III–V(化学元素周期表中III至V族元素) materials, GeSn PDs have a relatively high dark current.

2）连接并列但存在关联的两个或多个名词（人名亦可）。

Tips：hyphen和en dash在部分应用场景中容易混淆。若横线连接的两个（或多个）词是并列关系，且前词不是对后词的修饰限定，则用en dash。若加横线后构成的词明显是作为形容词使用，则用hyphen。

更长的“—”

中文：长度与中文连接符号“一字线”相近，一字线可表示时间、地域等的起止，也可标示数值范围，用法详见GB/T 15834—2011第4.13.3.2节。

英文：称作“em dash”，键盘上输入“Ctrl+Alt+减号”或“Alt+‘0151’”可显示此符号（Windows系统，必须用小键盘上的减号键或数字键）。用法与中文标号——破折号类似，可以看作英文中的破折号，也可用其他标点符号替代。

1）可用逗号替代

• There was only one person suited to the job—Mr. Li.

• There was only one person suited to the job,Mr. Li.

2）可用括号和逗号替代

• As shown in Fig. 2(c), the instantaneous chirp rate—estimated as the average rate within 1 MHz calibration interval—is calculated, and is later used for chirp linearization.

最长的“——”

中文：标点符号之一，破折号，用法详见GB/T 15834—2011第4.10节。

英文：不属于常见英文标点符号。

不一样的“~”

中文：浪纹线，参照GB/T 15834—2011第4.13.3.2节，主要用于表示数值范围，例如15~20 km，第五~八课。

英文：称作“wave dash”，不能标示数值范围，常用于表示约数，相当于“approximately”（意为“大约”）。

这是一篇文章的题名，如果两处“~”都换用“approximately”，显得累赘。

总结一下，长度不一的横线在中英文中都有使用，中文归类为“连接号(‘-’‘—’‘~’)+破折号(——)”，英文则包含“hyphen (‘-’)+各种dash (‘–’‘—’‘~’)”。形式和用法有相似，有不同，用对、用好这些横线看起来不甚容易，但在日常工作中多留意，注意积累，会享受到符号带给我们的便利！
