以九为尊的重阳文化（Nine in Double Ninth Festival）

重阳节，又称重九节、晒秋节，为每年的农历（Lunar Calendar）九月初九日。《易经》中把“六”定为阴数，把“九”定为阳数（Positive Number/Yang Number），九月九日，日月并阳，两九相重，故称重阳，也叫重九。重阳节早在战国时期就已经形成，自魏晋重阳气氛日渐浓郁，倍受历代文人墨客吟咏，到了唐代被正式定为民间的节日，此后历朝历代沿袭至今。

在客家文化与皇家文化中，“九”这个数字都蕴含着尊崇之意。客家文化（Hakka Culture）中，“九”与“久”同音，故客家人把“九”，视为“吉祥”的象征（Symbol for Auspiciousness），有“崇九”风俗。皇家文化（Imperial Culture）有以九为尊的传统。九为阳数的极数，即单数最大的数，帝王因之称为“九五之尊”（The Imperial Throne）。

1989年农历九月九日被定为老人节，倡导全社会树立尊老、敬老、爱老、助老的风气，这和以九为尊的重阳文化正是一脉相承。

重阳节习俗

在重阳节，人们在这一天举家出游赏秋、登高远眺、观赏菊花、遍插茱萸、吃重阳糕、饮菊花酒。

赏秋（Appreciate the Autumn）

赏秋中的秋指的不只是秋天的景色，更包含了秋日丰收的农作物（Crops）等，而中国南方某些地区还保留了“晒秋”的特色，在湖南、广西、安徽、江西等平地极少的村庄，村民们只好利用房前屋后及自家窗台屋顶架晒、挂晒农作物（Dry the Crops under the Sun），逐渐演变为传统农俗现象。

登高（Mountain Climbing）

重阳节首先有登高的习俗。金秋九月，天高气爽，这个季节登高远望可达到心旷神怡、健身祛病（Ward Off the Diseases）的目的。自古以来，重阳时节的登高也不断出现在文人的古诗词中，如唐代诗人王维、杜甫、杜牧都以此为题作诗，其中《九月九日忆山东兄弟》流传很广：独在异乡为异客，每逢佳节倍思亲。遥知兄弟登高处，遍插茱萸少一人。

赏菊饮菊（Appreciate the Chrysanthemums and Drink Chrysanthemums Wine）

重阳日，历来就有赏菊花的风俗，所以古来又称菊花节。农历九月俗称菊月，节日举办菊花大会，倾城的人潮赴会赏菊。从三国魏晋以来，重阳聚会饮酒（Drink Wine in Reunion）、赏菊赋诗（Appreciate the Chrysanthemums and Compose Verse）已成时尚。在中国古俗中，菊花象征长寿（Symbolize the Longevity）。
