本句是疑问副词why引导的特殊疑问句，主谓宾结构，主语Mr. Gilbert,谓语动词telephone,其中did是助动词，帮助动词构成疑问句，宾语his house,状语1是why.

3.While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so.

当约翰·吉尔伯特住院的时候，他问医生他的手术是否成功，但医生拒绝告诉他。

本句是while引导的时间状语从句，主句里套的有宾语从句，以及并列句。

while从句是主系表结构，主语是John Gilbert,谓语动词是was,，表语是in hospital.

主句主语是主谓宾宾从，主语he，谓语动词asked，宾语his doctor,宾补是to tell him，宾从是whether引导的宾从，作tell的直接宾语，主系表结构，主语his operation,系动词had been,表语successful.

连词but后面的句子是主谓宾状结构，主语the doctor，谓语动词refused,宾语是to do so. so在这里为代词，代替前面的动词不定式(在 to tell himwhether…)。它一般出现 believe, do, expect, hope,.

4.The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone.

第二天，这位病人要了一部床头电话。

这句是主谓宾状结构，主语the patient，谓语动词是asked for,宾语是a bedside telephone，状语是名词短语the following day，注意这里following是形容词。

5.When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington..

当房间只剩他一个人的时，他挂通了医院的交换台，要求与米灵顿医生讲话。

这句是when引导的时间状语从句，主句是and连接的两个并列句

从句是主系表结构，主语he，谓语动词是was,表语alone.

第一个并列句是主谓宾结构，主语he，谓语是telephoned，宾语是the hospital exchange.

第二个句子是主谓结构，主语是省略的he，谓语是asked for,宾语是Doctor Millington.

6.When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.

这是when引导的时间状语从句，主句里面又套宾语从句。

7.He asked if Mr. Gilbert's operation had been successful and the doctor told him that it had been.

他问吉尔伯特先生的手术是否成功，医生告诉他手术很成功。

这个句子是and连接的两个并列句，

第一句是if引导的宾语从句，主句主语he,谓语动词asked,后面是if引导的宾从，宾从主系表结构，主语Mr. Gilbert's operation，谓语had been,表语successful.

第二句是宾语从句，宾从作直接宾语，主句主谓双宾结构，主语the doctor,谓语动词told,间接宾语是him,直接宾语是宾从，宾从主语it，谓语是had been,省略相同的表语successful.

8.He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks.

然后他又问吉尔伯特先生什么时候可以回家，医生说他再医院还必须再住上两个星期。

这句是and连接的两个复合句，

9.Then Dr. Millington asked the caller if he was a relative of the patient.
