刘俊阳，副教授，国际关系学院文化与传播系副主任。北师大中文系中国古代文学硕士，美国玛瑞埃塔大学和丹麦奥尔堡大学访问学者。具有30年国际会议和国际交流翻译工作经验。国际关系学院重大项目“21世纪大国软实力研究”项目负责人，发表中英文论文20篇。执教30年，讲授4门全英文课：西方文明史、美国文化、中国传统文化与哲学（国关与丹麦奥尔堡大学联合硕士项目）、软实力与文明冲突研究。多次参与中国国际广播电台“今日Today”专栏讨论国际问题、2014年哥本哈根中国与北欧五国智库圆桌会议发表演讲、2019年亚洲文明对话大会“亚洲文明互鉴与人类命运共同体构建”国际智库论坛演讲，演讲稿在英文版《上海日版》发表。

2.COURSE INTRODUCTION 课程简介

It is an introduction of the History of Western Civilization. Students are required to apply Critical Thinking to explore the development, characteristics, achievements and negative influence of the Western Civilization.

It is a massive open online course teaching in English, open to all university students at home and abroad. It can be a general course for all majors or a specialized course for liberal arts majors.

国内第一门全英文“西方文明史”慕课。2019年获北京市教改创新和北京市优质教材与课件2个立项。上线后面向各高校，既可以是所有专业通识课，也可作为文科专业课。

本课程系统讲授西方文明史，要求掌握西方文明史基本知识、全面客观理解其成就、特征、发展脉络及其负面影响，培养批判性思维和胸怀祖国、放眼世界的人文情怀。通过全英文教学培养学生在全英文环境下学习、思考、阅读文献和网络搜索的能力。

3.REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING  教学环节及考核

(1) Length of study: 16 weeks. It requires 5 hours of studying per week. It has 8 chapters and each chapter has 5 sections. The video is 638 minutes long, consists of 40 sections.

(2) Required Exercises: there are 2 single choice questions and 3 right/wrong questions in each section. Each week has 2 discussion topics. Please finish them on time.

(3) Optional Exercises: there are 5 keywords in each section and 3 questions in each chapter. It doesn't count as a grade and doesn't require to be done online.

(4) The Final Exam has 50 questions, 2 points for each and 100 points in total, including 20 single choice questions, 20 right/wrong questions and 10 fill-in-the-blank questions. The repetition rate of the final exam questions and section exercises is 30%.

(5) Final Grade = watch video 30% + study text 10% + exercises 20% + discussion 10% + final exam 30%.

(1)共16教学周、每周学习5小时。视频时长638分钟，共8章40个小节。

(2)章节练习有80个选择题和120个判断题，每周设置2个讨论题。要求参考讲义根据教学进度线上完成。

(3)每小节5个关键词、每章3个问答题属于选择性练习，不计入成绩，不需要线上完成，建议参考讲义和英文网络搜索自主完成。

(4)第16周期末考试，共50题，每题2分，共100分，包括单选题20、判断题20、填空题10，期末考试和章节练习题重复率为30%。

(5)最终成绩 = 观看视频30% + 学习课文10% + 练习20% + 讨论10% + 期末考试30%。

4.TEACHING IN ENGLISH  全英文教学理念

我教学的第一原则是No Chinese。我常跟学生讲：如果你学习英语10年了，还在读中文翻译的英文书，你应当感到耻辱 It is shameful to read English books in Chinese translation if you have been learning English for more than 10 years。通过了高考，你现在是大学生了。不要说你英语不行！只要事先预习讲义、反复观看视频、认真复习和完成练习并参与讨论，你会渐渐适应全英文教学。当然全英文课也会为你提高英语综合能力及通过四六级考试助力。

我在理论上的创新尝试是提出“拐杖依赖症 Walking Stick Dependency Syndrome”的概念。在海恩斯第二语言学习五阶段理论和塞林格的中介语理论基础上，我认为塞林格所谓语言石化现象Fossilization即第二语言习得过程中出现的止步不前难以到达最高级阶段的原因就是“拐杖依赖症”。英语学习过多依赖母语，中文就成了拐杖。全英文教学的宗旨是克服“拐杖依赖症”，丢掉拐杖，培养学生能够在全英文环境下学习、思考、阅读英文文献和使用英文搜索的能力。

建议经常使用谷歌Google或必应Bing英文搜索；经常浏览英文网站如中国日版China daily、中国环球电视网CGTN、BBC和CNN等；经常使用在线英文地图如Google或Bing地图；经常使用在线英文维基百科Wikipedia和网上英英字典如剑桥词典Cambridge Dictionary、韦氏词典Merriam-Webster等。
