Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that ...

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

56. The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to        .

A. inform     B. persuade    C. describe     D. entertain

(2015年天津卷B篇)While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.

41. How are social robots different from household robots?

A. They can control their emotions.

 B. They are more like humans.

 C. They do the normal housework.

6.  Inside the pleasingly fragrant cafe, So All May Eat(SAME) in downtown Denver, the spirit of generosity(慷慨)is instantly noticeable: A donation box stands in place of a cash register. Customers here pay only what they can afford, no questions asked.

A risky business plan, perhaps, but SAME Café has done one unchangeable thing in the Mile High City for six years: Open only at midday, the restaurant provides poor local people with healthy, delicious lunches six days a week. Those unable to pay for their meals can instead volunteer as waiters and waitresses, and dishwashers, or took after the buildings and equipment for the cafe.

“It’s based on trust, and it’s working all right” , says co-owner Brad Birky, who started the café in 2006 with his wife Libby. Previously volunteering at soup kitchens, the Birkys were dissatisfied with the often unhealthy meals they served there.

“We wanted to offer quality food in a restaurant where everyone felt comfortable, regardless of their circumstances,” Birky says. SAME’s special lunch menu changes daily and most food materials are natural and grown by local farmers. The café now averages 65 to 70 customers (and eight volunteers) a day. And the spirit of generosity behind the project appears to be spreading. In early 2007,one volunteer who had cleared snow for his meals during the long winter said goodbye to the Birkys,” He said he was going to New Orleans to help with the hurricane clear up,” says Birky.

The author’s attitude towards running such a café is_______.

A. unfavorable     B. approving         C. doubtful     D. cautious

9.  There was a message to telephone the police in California. There would be an autopsy; they suspected suicide. In the room where my father died, the police told me on the telephone, were many empty liquor bottles and empty barbiturate pillboxes. Much later the police told me that the general squalor of the scene—my father lying on his stomach naked, his head under a chair, “legs and feet together pointing eastward” in the language of the death report—combined with the awful smell in the dank, tiny room to argue, even to case-hardened cops, hopelessness. This suicide was no mystery. It made sense to me. I thought my father had every reason to welcome death, and I had always assumed he would try to control his history to the very end. It’s nothing. But the autopsy a few days later revealed a death from congestion of his arteries; probably, when he died, he wanted to live forever...

B. the writer hates policemen

C. the writer is a Catholic

D. the writer’s father was living alone when he died

10.  Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(尝试)increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习)for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

(T1) According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is _______.

A. a result of overlearning    B. a special case of cramming

C. a skill to deal with math problems  D. a basic step towards advanced studies

(T2) What is the author's opinion on cramming?

 A. It leads to failure in college exams.   B. It's helpful only in a limited way.

  C. It's possible to result in poor memory.  D. It increases students' learning interest.

“my wife already does that” was a common response…

2. 定位:Driving through the countryside was always an adventure.

3. C。寻读到文章这一段之后发现,第一句提到优点,但随之用一个however引出作者的态度“difficult to accept”,因此答案为C,不要仅仅根据第一句“take the place of all the old …”

5. D。根据第一段中的“professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them ‘the overpraised generation.’”

7. C。根据第五段中“Global demand is at an all-time record high, and global supplies are at all-time record lows”可推断Matt Rush认为,全球对农业的需要达到了最高,而全球的供应则达到了最低,故在农业上投资肯定会获利,即C项正确。

10.  (T1)A。根据文章第四段“because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.”

(T2)B。根据文章的最后一段中的“By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned.”
