With Matsonia now in service, Matson’s seven-year, $900+ million Hawaii fleet renewal is complete. Matsonia joins its Kanaloa Class sister ship Lurline in Matson’s Hawaii service. Together, these two combination container/roll-on, roll-off (“con-ro”) ships call Honolulu, Long Beach, and Oakland weekly and allow Matson to offer twice-weekly Hawaii service from Northern and Southern California.

The Kanaloa Class vessels with be the third and fourth of Matson’s new state-of-the-art ships entering service in 2019 and 2020. Both will have an enclosed garage with room for approximately 500 vehicles, plus ample space for rolling stock and breakbulk cargo. Equipped with the latest in green technology, Matsonia features a fuel-efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks, freshwater ballast systems, and the first Tier 3 dual-fuel engines to be deployed in containerships serving West Coast ports. All of Matson’s new vessels are part of a larger $1 billion investment in modernizing Matson’s Hawaii service.
