       讲座嘉宾：Edward J. Harpham博士，德克萨斯大学达拉斯分校（UT Dallas）Hobson Wildenthal荣誉学院院长、政治学教授，曾在UT Dallas荣誉学院研究并讲授流行音乐和古典音乐超过20年。

Lecturer: Dr. Edward J. Harpham is the Dean of the Hobson Wildenthal Honors College and Professor of Political Science at The University of Texas at Dallas. He has studied and lectured on popular and classical music at the University of Texas at Dallas in the Honors College for over 20 years.

       讲座介绍：本系列讲座的目的是概述二十世纪和二十一世纪美国流行音乐的主要流派。本课程将首先从美国传统歌曲和古典音乐中探讨美国流行音乐的出现，还将探讨音频技术的变化对流行音乐演变的影响，以及各流行乐派如何从美国的多种民族文化和地理位置当中发展而来。课程的大部分时间将用于聆听和讨论20世纪的各种音乐。

Overview: The goal of this seminar series is to provide an overview to the major genres in American popular music in the twentieth and twentieth-first centuries. The course will begin by discussing the emergence of popular music in America out of traditional American song and classical music. Time will also be spent examining the impact of changing audio technology on the evolution of popular music and how various popular music genres developed out of America’s many ethnic cultures and geographic locations. Much of the course will be spent listening and discussing a wide range of musical selections from the twentieth century.

Lecture 1: The Origins of American Popular Music: From Stephen Foster to Jolson, Gershwin and Copland

This seminar will investigate the origins of American popular music in the nineteenth century songs of Stephen Foster, the twentieth century songs of Al Jolson, and the classical music of George Gershwin and Aaron Copland. There will also be a discussion of the impact of audio technology and the performance and recording of popular music.

第二讲：从爵士乐到蓝调和灵魂乐

本讲将讨论非裔美国音乐对美国流行音乐的贡献，以及这种音乐如何进入美国文化生活的主流。课程将特别关注这些流派背后的音乐理论以及标识流派的歌词。课程会讨论到包括艾灵顿公爵、本尼古德曼、约翰科尔特兰、迈尔斯戴维斯、罗伯特约翰逊、The Temptations以及摩城之声在内的音乐家和团体。

Lecture 2: From Jazz to the Blues and Soul Music

This seminar will discuss the contributions of African-American music to American popular music and how this music entered the mainstream of American cultural life. Particular attention will be paid to the music theory lying behind these genres and the lyrics that came to define the genres. Individuals to be discussed will include Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Robert Johnson, and the Temptations as well as the Motown Sound.

第三讲：乡村、蓝草与传统民间音乐

Lecture 3: Country, Blue Grass and Traditional Folk Music

This lecture will explore the development of country, blue grass and folk music, explaining their characteristics, their origins, and their contributions to the evolution of popular music in America. Music to be analyzed will include that of Bill Monroe, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash and the Kingston Trio.

第四讲：摇滚与美国流行音乐的再创造

本讲将会探讨摇滚乐派如何将此前课程中讨论过的各个流派融合在一起，以创造出独特的世界音乐流派。讲座会涉及到鲍勃·迪伦、沙滩男孩、老鹰乐队、the Band和布鲁斯·斯普林斯汀等音乐家。

Lecture 4: Rock and Rock and the Reinvention of American Popular Music

This lecture will look at how the genre of rock and roll fused together the genres discussed earlier in the course to create a distinctive genre of world music. Individuals studied will include Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, the Eagles, the Band and Bruce Springsteen.

最后环节：学生展示

根据班级规模，学生以小组形式（2-3人）或以个人为单位，从研讨课中选取一个话题，或从美国音乐的其他方面选取话题，用PPT进行演示。所有学生均须陈述3-5分钟。

Final Presentation

Students work in group (2-3 persons) or individually, depending on the scale of class, choosing one topic from the seminar or from another perspective on American music, to make a presentation with PPT. All students are required to present 3-5 minutes.
