美丽的Echo爱上了河神Cephisus之子Narcissus，一个骄傲和美貌都达到极致的男子 。

一天，Echo带着无法遏止的爱，紧紧地跟在Narcissus的身后，希望他能注意到自己，然后接受自己这颗爱他爱到痴迷、爱到发狂的心。

Narcissus感觉到有人在跟着自己，便问：“谁在这里？”

Echo欣喜万分，她多想告诉Narcissus她正为着对他的爱而被煎熬。可是她没有正常的说话能力，根本无法表达自己。

Narcissus没有等待别人的耐性，见Echo不回答，便欲抽身而去。

Echo不愿放弃这次机会，她想，只要让Narcissus多留一会儿，她就能多一分让他明白自己的希望。于是，她的回答冲口而出，只有三个字：“在这里。”

“不要这样。”Narcissus说，“我宁死也不愿让你来占有我！”

“占有我！”

Narcissus听了瘪了瘪嘴，认定跟着自己的这个姑娘是个轻浮的人，便满脸不屑地走了。

Echo羞愧难当，怀着悲痛的心情躲到了山林深处，最后憔悴而死。

报应女神纳米西斯为了惩罚Narcissus，让他爱上自己水中的影子，最后也使他得不到所爱的对象憔悴而死。

Narcissus死后，化成了水仙花，所以Narcissus在英语中也就是水仙花的意思。而由Narcissus也衍生出 Narcissism一词，意为“自恋”。

因为三毛，很多人也为自己取了Echo作为英文名。

也许是为了纪念心中这一道不曾消退的回声，也许是还做着那个遥远的撒哈拉的不醒的梦。
