You should have a try at a kind of local delicacy -- five-colored glutinous rice in Xingyi.

五色糯米饭，又称“乌饭”、“五色饭”，是布依族、壮族等少数民族的传统风味小吃，因糯米饭大多呈黑、蓝、黄、紫、白五种颜色而得此名。

Five-colored glutinous, also known as "black rice" and "five-colored rice", is a traditional dish of the Bouyei. It is named after the rice in five different colors mostly: black, blue, yellow, purple and white.

常言道：民以食为天。在贵州兴义，这是布依族人民不可缺少的一种食物。

As the saying goes, “Food is the paramount necessity of the people.” Five-colored glutinous rice is an indispensable food for the Boueyi people in Xingyi, Guizhou.

不可缺少，是因为它很独特。

It’s really unique.

五色糯米饭，被当地人看做是吉祥如意、五谷丰登的象征，同时也象征着一家人像糯米饭团一样团结在一起。

Five-colored glutinous rice is regarded as a symbol of good luck and harvest for locals, and it also means families should get united like the glutinous rice roll.

每年农历三月三或清明时节，当地家家户户都做五色糯米饭已经成为一种传承已久的习俗。

During the Qingming Festival, it has become a centuried custom for local families to make five-colored glutinous rice.

香甜软糯的五色糯米饭并非糯米本色，而是用原生态的植物染成。

 The colors of sweet and soft glutinous rice are not natural, but dyed with some wild plants.

枫叶，用于染黑色。

The Bouyei people extract black pigment from Maple leaves.

蝶豆花，用于染蓝色。

Blue is from butterfly pea.

紫番藤，可染紫色。

Purple from Wisteria sinensis.

密蒙花，能染黄色。

Pole Butterfly Bush gives the rice a yellow color.

加上糯米的原色——白色，就是常见的五色糯米饭。

The original white rice and rice dyed by all these colors has been steamed for the final five-colored glutinous rice.

原生态的植物中草药，对人体有益无害的天然色素，让五色糯米饭真正色、香、味俱全，别有风味的同时，还有益于人体健康。

The original ecological herbs and the natural pigments that are beneficial to the human body, making the five-colored glutinous rice have a perfect combination of color, aroma and taste. Besides having distinctive flavor, the five-colored glutinous rice also is good for health.
