那我们都知道「哭」的英文是 cry，「眼泪」的英文是 tear，但你是否跟这位同学一样有过这样的困惑呢：

老师您好，为什么这句话：I was moved to tears when I heard his story.（我听到他的故事时感动落泪。） tears 后面会有 s 呢？眼泪不是不可数吗？

中英文对于可数不可数的思维不见得相同，tear 就是其中一个例子。在英文思维中，tear 指「一滴眼泪、一颗泪珠」。例如：

I saw a tear rolling down her cheek.（我看到一滴眼泪滚落她的脸颊。）

不过因为哭泣时通常不会只掉落一滴眼泪，因此 tear 这个字通常会用复数形式呈现。例如：

My eyes were filled with tears as I waved goodbye to her.（我跟她挥手道别时眼里都是泪水。）

When she put down the phone, there were tears of joy in her eyes.（她放下 ... 时，眼中满是喜悦的泪水。）

He couldn’t stop the tears from ing at the thought of his mother’s death.（他一想到去世的母亲就忍不住流泪。）

英文中 tear 的用法相当广泛，也有许多搭配用语，常见的有像是：

意思是「含着眼泪」，也就是「哭了」的意思。例如：

The children were in tears as they said goodbye to each other.（孩子们相互道别时都哭了。）

意思是「眼中有泪、眼里含着泪水、眼眶泛泪」。例如：

With tears in his eyes, he left the stage to thunderous applause.（他含着眼泪，在如雷掌声中离开舞台。）

Shed 跟 weep 都是动词，意思是「流（泪）」，所以 shed / weep tears 自然就是「流泪、落泪、掉泪...」的意思囉。例如：

She shed tears as she read the letter.（她边读那封信边落泪。）

而我们中文常说的「猫哭耗子」，英文则可以说 shed crocodile tears，例如：

Don’t shed crocodile tears. We all know what you did to him.（别猫哭耗子了。我们都知道你对他做了什么。）

Burst into 是「突然迸出」的意思，所以 burst into tears 的字面意思是「突然迸出眼泪」，也就是「突然哭出来、眼泪夺眶而出」。例如：

The anxious parents burst into tears when they saw their lost child e home safe.（这对焦急的父母看到他们走失的孩子平安返家时，眼泪夺眶而出。）

Break down 指「无法忍住想哭的情绪」，所以 break down in tears 的意思自然就是「忍不住哭出来、突然崩溃大哭」的意思囉！例如：

Knowing that she’d never e back, he couldn’t help but break down in tears.（得知她再也不会回来后，他忍不住崩溃大哭。）

Hold back 跟 fight back 有「忍住、强忍」的意思，所以 hold / fight back one’s tears 指的就是「忍住泪水、强忍眼泪」。例如：

She raised her head, trying to fight back tears.（她抬起头，试图忍住眼泪。）
