“结婚率”、“失业率”、“男女比率”、“土地退化率”......这些都是我们日常生活中听到的比率，但是表示“比率”的单词有proportion, rate, ratio, percentage，我们该用哪一个呢，这些单词是否可以互换呢？

我们先来对比“proportion”和“percentage”之间的区别。“Proportion”和“percentage”都可以表示“一类或一组事物占总体的比例”。

但是，“proportion”的意思是“份额、比例”，它既可以是一个百分数，也可以是一个分数；而“percentage”的意思是“百分比”，它只能以百分数的形式来呈现一个数字。

如果有人问你，“What proportion of the human body is water?”，即人体内水分的比例是多少？

你既可以回答说：“It’s about 2/3.”，即大约占三分之二，也可以回答说：“It’s about 60%.”，大约占60%。

如果把proportion换成percentage，问题变为：“What percentage of the human body is water?”，即人体内水分的百分比是多少？

那么你只能用百分数来回答：“It’s about 60%.”，即大约占60%。

除了指“比例、份额”以外，名词“proportion”还有另外一个意思，它可以表示“比例、比率”，用来比较两个事物的数量的多少或水平的高低。

举一个例子：

The proportion of men to women in this company is 5:6.

这家公司的男女比例是五比六。

在“proportion、rate、ratio”和“percentage”当中，除了“proportion”以外，“ratio”也可以表示“两个事物之间的比例”。这两个词通常可以互换使用。

比如，“The proportion of men to women in this company is 5:6.”如果把这句话中的“proportion”换成“ratio”，即“The ratio of men to women in this company is 5:6.”，互换之后，句意仍不变。

但如果要表示“两个事物的数量或水平成正比”，只能用“in proportion to” 来表达这个意思。

举一个例子：

The salary of an employee in this company is in proportion to the number of years they’ve worked here.

这家公司的雇员薪资与其工龄成正比。

最后，我们来讲讲“rate”。“Rate”主要有三个意思：

第一个是“比率”，它指的是“某件事情在特定时间内发生的频率”或者“事情的某个方面在特定时间内可能出现的比率”。

比如，“就业率”用英语说就是“employment rate”，这个数字通常指的是“就业者在特定时期内占成年人总数的比率”。当然，类似的比率还有“birth rate（出生率）”、“success rate（成功率）”、“divorce rate（离婚率）”、“unemployment rate（失业率）”等等。

举一个例子：

Experts believe better medical care has played an important part in the decline of the infant mortality rate in this area.

专家认为，更好的医疗保健在降低该地区婴儿死亡率方面发挥了重要的作用。

Survival rates can give patients and their families an idea of how likely they’re expected to recover in the future.

存活率可以让病人及家属了解将来康复的可能性有多大 。

“Rate”的第二个意思是“速率”，也就是“某事发生或改变的速度”。单词 “proportion、ratio”和“percentage”都没有这个意思。

举一个例子：

The rainforest is shrinking at an alarming rate due to human activities.

由于人类活动， 热带雨林面积正在以惊人的速度减少。

Local bookshops are going out of business at the rate of five a year.

当地的书店正在以每年五家的速率倒闭。

“Rate”的第三个意思是“价格、费用”。

举一个例子：

The hourly rate for waiting staff at this restaurant is ¥30.

这家餐厅的服务员的时薪是30元。

Which bank has the highest interest rate?

哪家银行的利率最高？

上面讲了“proportion、rate、ratio”和“percentage”的区别。现在，我们来回答一个问题：土地退化率“the proportion of land degradation”和就业率“employment rate”当中的“proportion”和“rate”是否能相互替换？

答案是：不可以。因为从字面上看，“the proportion of land degradation”指的是“土地退化的部分占土地的总面积的比例、份额”，所以用“proportion”最合适。就业率“employment rate”是统计学上的概念，不仅有时间限制，而且还有可能指特定的年龄或地区的“就业率”，所以不能直接把“rate”换成“proportion”。
