我们城市下水道里居住的则是臭名昭著、体型庞大的rat，西方世界一般认为rat是邪恶、粗俗的代名词。

Mouse则被看作好玩、可爱或容易侍弄，也是卡通形象中经常使用的，我们有些人也爱养宠物鼠(a pet mouse)，不过它经常被用来形容腼腆、胆小的人。

归纳一下，mouse 和 rat 大致有这四种区别：

1. mouse 体型小（身长12-20cm）；rat体型大（身长40+cm）

2. mouse 尾巴有毛（hairy）；rat 尾巴有鳞（scaly）

3. mouse的嘴是尖的（triangular）；rat 的嘴相对更平（blunt）

4. mouse 每天产生的老鼠屎（droppings）是 rat 的两倍。

说了这么多，“鼠年”到底用 mouse 还是 rat？

虽然说rat貌似带着更多的贬义，但是鼠年更常说的还是 the y ear of the Rat，不过也有人说成是the year of the Mouse。

但对于咱们中国人而言，如果非得在小耗子和大耗子里选一个，那么更大、更肥、更富态的“大耗子”（rat）恐怕更适合当中国鼠年的吉祥物吧！

今天既然讲到老鼠，顺便讲两个最常用的关于 mouse 和 rat 的言语：

第一句跟 mouse 有关：

“When the cat’s away the mice will play.”

这里的 mice 就是 mouse 的复数。整句话字面意思是“当猫不在的时候，老鼠就出来玩耍了”。意译一下就是“老虎不在家，猴子称霸王”。无论中文还是英文，念起来都朗朗上口，画面感都很强。

第二句跟 rat 有关：

“smell a rat”

这是半句话，前面还得加个主语，比如：I smell a rat.字面意思是“我闻到了老鼠的味道”，实际上表示“我觉得很可疑”，还可以意译为“我觉得有蹊跷”、“我感觉有猫腻”。中文里的“猫腻”，在英文中要用“rat”，有趣吧？
