俗话说“没到东门老街，就不算来过深圳”，东门老街——全称深圳东门商业步行街区，是深圳最早的商圈。在上世纪80年代，其它商圈尚未兴起，每天无论什么时候去东门老街，那里始终人头攒动，散发着浓厚的商业气息和市井生活气息。

As the saying goes, “If you haven’t been to Dongmen Old Street, you haven’t been to Shenzhen.” Dongmen Old Street, also known as Shenzhen Dongmen Commercial Pedestrian Street, is the earliest business district in Shenzhen. In the 1980s, Dongmen Old Street was always crowded and bustling.

东门老街的历史可以追溯至明代中期，当时它的名字还是“深圳旧墟”。当时，在如今的东门一带陆续出现了一些村落，如赤勘村、罗湖村、隔塘村和湖贝村等。几个村的族人于村落间建起集市，集市的范围最早有上大街、鸭仔街等几条街市。也就是说，东门最早只是一个乡间集市。1979年建市后，“深圳”成为市名，深圳墟则改称“东门老街”。

The history of Dongmen Old Street can be traced back to the middle of the Ming Dynasty, when it was still named Shenzhen Old Market. At that time, a number of villages appeared one after another in the present-day Dongmen area, including Chikan Village, Luohu Village, Getang Village and Hubei Village. Markets were frequently set up among the villages. In other words, Dongmen was just a country market at the beginning. In 1979, “Shenzhen” became the name of the city and Shenzhen Market was renamed as Dongmen Old Street.

如今，在东门文化广场就有一幅老东门墟市图，由青铜铸造，宽3米、长16.5米，向游客展示着明清时期东门墟市店铺林立、客流熙攘的岭南民俗风情。

Today, there is a picture of the old Dongmen Market in Dongmen Cultural Square, cast in bronze, three meters wide and 16.5 meters long, showing visitors the Lingnan folklore of the Ming and Qing dynasties when Dongmen Market was full of stores and bustling with customers.

随着时代变迁，东门原建筑物与周边环境条件恶化，改造工作成为迫切需要。1999年，东门改造的1.0版本完工。2016年，东门老街被纳入罗湖区十大微片区交通和景观综合提升项目。2018年6月，东门老街片区交通和景观工程全部基础设施建设工作完工，正式向市民开放。2020年7月22日，东门老街被列入全国第二批步行街升级改造试点。2022年12月18日，东门步行街改造提升启动仪式在罗湖区东门步行街举行。根据改造规划，未来将全面优化东门商业步行街整体环境，培育特色品牌、创新消费业态场景，打造留住深圳记忆、链接年轻人的“文化源头、商业潮流、产业活力”的新东门。

With the passage of time, the original buildings and surrounding environmental conditions of Dongmen deteriorated, urgently calling for renovation. In 1999, the Version 1.0 renovation of Dongmen was completed. In 2016, Dongmen Old Street was included in the 10 micro-area traffic and landscape comprehensive upgrading projects of Luohu District. In June 2018, all infrastructure construction work of the project was completed and officially opened to the public. On July 22, 2020, Dongmen Old Street was included in the second batch of national pilot pedestrian streets marked for upgrading. On December 18, 2022, the Dongmen Pedestrian Street renovation and upgrading launch ceremony was held on Dongmen Pedestrian Street in Luohu District. According to the renovation plan, the overall environment of Dongmen Pedestrian Street will be comprehensively optimized in the future, cultivating special brands and innovative consumer scenes to create a new Dongmen that retains the memory of Shenzhen and links young people with “cultural sources, commercial trends and industrial vitality.”

具有三百多年历史的东门，已然是深圳当之无愧的商业地标之一。但商业并不是这里的唯一，东门老街的历史和东门老街的现在早已融为一体。人们可以去思月书院、东江游击队指挥部（叶挺将军纪念馆）追忆往昔，也可以前往各大百货商场休闲娱乐，还可以前往东门町美食街、庙街及众多饮食老字号感受烟火气息。正所谓，到了东门老街，深圳人就找到了自己的根。

With a history of more than 300 years, Dongmen is already one of the well-deserved commercial landmarks in Shenzhen. But commerce is not the only thing here. The past and present Dongmen Old Streets have long been integrated into each other and the roots of Shenzheners can be found there.
