學習重點二：和長、寬、高等維度相關的實用片語

形容物體的大小，

尤其是添購家具、室內裝潢時，

不外乎會提到長、寬、高或是體積等等的維度測量用詞，

這篇文章要介紹如何用英文說明物體的維度大小。

1. 長度 length (n.)

long 長的、久的 (adj.)

lengthen 加長 (v.)

2. 寬度 width (n.)

wide 寬的 (adj.)

widen 加寬 (v.)

3. 高度 height (n.)

high 高的 (adj.)

heighten 增強 (某種情緒) (v.)

4. 深度 depth (n.)

deep 深的 adj.

deepen 加深 (v.)

1. The length/width/height/depth of + sth is…

The length of the table is 150 cm.

桌子的長度是150公分

The depth of the lake is 0.9 m.

湖的寬度是 90 公分

2. 數字+單位 + in length/width/height

The pool is 3 m in width.

泳池的寬度是3公尺

He’s six feet in height.

他身高有6英呎高

(也可以說 He’s six feet tall.)

但是 in depth 則通常用來指深入詳盡的，

如: I didn’t go in depth into the issue with her.

我沒和她深入談論這個問題。

在這個句子中當副詞使用，形容動詞 go

in-depth 深入的 則是形容詞，

如: in-depth report 深入的報告

1.at length 長時間地

Amy talked at length about her plan to move to the US.

Amy 滔滔不絕地談論她要搬去美國的計畫。

2. wide of the mark 錯了、不準確

The weather forecast was completely wide of the mark.

這個氣象預報完全不準。

3. come/get off your high horse 別再自以為是

You should get off your high horse and do the work like everyone else.

你別再自以為是，好好的跟大家一樣工作吧！

4. out of one’s depth (程度、能力) 無法勝任

Jack was out of his depth at his new job.

Jack 感到自己無法勝任新工作。
