“That’s fun, to do science!’ 👏 Dr. Katalin Karikó, winner of the 2022 Solvay Prize, one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2021, and the scientist behind the COVID-19 vaccine joined our first Creative Hour on Breakthrough Discoveries In collaboration with the #AvantorFoundation. Originally from Hungary, Dr. Karikó grew up in a small town, with less than 10,000 inhabitants. Her father, a butcher, and mother, a bookkeeper, weren’t professors. “We didn’t have running water, books, or a telephone. So, we didn’t even have a telephone book.’ What Dr Karikó did have was innate curiosity, and, as she pointed out, people in her life who encouraged her to explore it. It was this curiosity that attracted viewers from around the world, including from Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Italy, Serbia, Poland, India, Nigeria, Peru, Bangladesh, Australia, Cameroon, the US, the UK and Cote d'ivoire. Attendees were able to learn from her experience about what it takes to be successful, to believe in yourself, and how to handle obstacles. Facilitated by greenlight for girls founder, Melissa Rancourt, participants were invited to ask their own burning questions to Dr. Kariko, as well as to connect with each other. Thank you Dr. Katalin Karikó for inspiring so many people from around the world! 💫 Thank you to the Avantor Foundation for helping to make this possible. 👏 We will continue taking Dr. Kariko’s advice on the importance of encouraging curiosity, wherever it comes from. 🤩 You can read more about Dr. Katalin Karikó in the New York Times here https://lnkd.in/gHczcfB #anythingispossible #stemeducation #stemcareers #steminist
