When performing the Hop Jump, the user assumes a more aerodynamic pose as they fly through midair. The user then does a upward spring in midair to gain extra height.

In gameplay, the Hop Jump is useful for reaching areas above that are otherwise difficult to get to and avoiding falling into gaps. In addition, it will not cancel the momentum the user receives from the Boost Mode. The Hop Jump cannot damage enemies though, and using it leaves the user open to harm. The move can also only be pulled off after the user has been launched into midair by gimmicks like the Spring, Ramp, trampolines etc.

The Hop Jump made its debut in Sonic Advance 2 as Sonic and Amy's Big Air maneuvers. When using the Hop Jump in this game, Sonic bends his legs slightly and raises one of his palms upward, as if to grab a ledge. Amy meanwhile, keeps her raised hand in a fist and looks at the screen, for then to cover her skirt after reaching the peak of her jump. To perform the move in gameplay, the player must press up on Controlpadds + Rgba after being launched into midair by gimmicks.

Sonic Advance 3[] Hop Jump Sonic Advance 3

Sonic using the Hop Jump, from Sonic Advance 3.

In Sonic Advance 3, the Hop Jump returned as Sonic and Amy's Big Air maneuvers, and one of their Special Actions.[3][4] Otherwise, the characters perform the Hop Jump in the same manner as in Sonic Advance 2.

In this game, Sonic can only use the Hop Jump when having Tails as his partner. Similarly, Amy must have Cream as her partner. To use the Hop Jump in gameplay, the player must press up on Controlpadds + Rgba after being launched into midair by gimmicks, like in Sonic Advance 2.

Sonic Rush series[] Sonic Rush[] Hop Jump Sonic Rush

Sonic using the Hop Jump, from Sonic Rush.

In Sonic Rush, the Hop Jump acts as one of Sonic's Trick Actions. This time around, Sonic's execution of the Hop Jump has been altered; when using it, Sonic twirls around himself instead of raising his hand.

In this game, the Hop Jump still leaves Sonic vulnerable to damage; however, this can be circumvented if he is boosting. To use the Hop Jump in gameplay, the player has to press up on Controlpadds + RBUTTONDSSNNdisco after being launched into midair by a gimmick.

Sonic Rush Adventure[]

In Sonic Rush Adventure, the Hop Jump reprised its role as one of Sonic's Trick Actions. Sonic's execution of the move also returned to how it was in Sonic Advance 2 and 3.

In this game, the Hop Jump works just like it did in Sonic Rush, except it here serves the additional function of a combo finisher to a Trick Action chain. Like in Sonic Rush, to use the Hop Jump in gameplay, the player has to press up on Controlpadds + RBUTTONDSSNNdisco after being launched into midair by gimmicks.
