When communicating with English speakers there are many different ways to express your gratitude. As a modern gentleman it is important to grasp the difference between each of these. When speaking with a close friend, you do not want to distance yourself too much. Similarly, when speaking with your boss or a client, you don't want to sound disrespectful.

Below is a list of different words and phrases you can use alongside a deion of the situations they should be used in:

1.Nice one

Used commonly in sport.

Note: This can also be used to acknowledge when someone does something well, similar to "well done."

Common way to show appreciation between friends and family after a small gesture.

Note: This is often also used as a light hearted sarcastic response when someone close to you does or says something that is not to your liking or backfires and instead causes trouble for you. For example, if a friend tries to help you and fails, you can say "thanks a bunch" (said in a sarcastic tone) which translates to "thanks for trying anyway."

Or if someone close to you criticises your new hair style, for example, you may say "thanks a bunch," (also in a sarcastic tone) which basically means "you can speak to me like that because you are my friend."

This term falls slap bang in the middle of all the above measures. When used, more often than not it implies the recipient has made efforts to do something for you, and can also be used to show appreciation in advance. For example, "I appreciate your comments on my report," or "your help is much appreciated in advance."

For example, if someone gives you a ride to work, you may say "Much obliged" when you get out the car, which not only means "Thank you," but also implies you owe the person a similar favour in return.

12.That’s very kind of you

A versatile phrase, similar to a simple "thank you" that can be used in most situations.

Note: Commonly used as a polite way to reject a kindness, often followed by "but…" and your reason for refusal. For example, if someone offers to take you to dinner and you are unable to attend due to a prior engagement, you can say; "That's very kind of you, but I have other plans already. 16.You are a life saver

Do not take this term literally, it is not used to thank someone for saving your life, it is usually used an informal term of gratitude to thank someone for helping you handle something you would have otherwise been unable to do/complete yourself. For example, you can use this term when a colleague helps you reach a deadline that you would have missed without their assistance, or if a friend reminds you of an upcoming birthday or anniversary that you had completely forgotten about.

18.You are too kind

A modern gentleman will use this term frequently. This phrase is mostly used in the following two situations:

1. When someone pays you a compliment.

A modern gentleman is always modest and does not respond to compliments with a simple "thank you." Instead his response should imply that the compliment was too much, and that he has been over praised. "You are too kind" is a perfect response to such flattery.

2. In substitute of "you shouldn't have."

一个当代绅士会经常使用这个术语。这句话主要用于以下两种情况︰

19.I can’t thank you enough

Arguably the most polite phrase you have in your arsenal. However, since it is the most polite phrase you have, be sure not to overdo it. For example, if someone simply offers you a bite to eat, don't respond with "I can't thank you enough," that would be overkill. Use this only when the situation calls for it. For example, if you fall ill (touch wood) and are unable to take care of yourself then someone takes you to the hospital or takes care of you during your time of need. The term implies that a simple "thank you" is not sufficient and requires some form of action on your part to express how thankful you truly are.
