地名由来：原名 “平虏”，以明代的平虏守御千户所得名，寓 “平定虏寇”之意。 清朝时以忌讳“虏”字，取谐音改名 “平罗”。

2022年12月，平罗县被认定为2021-2025年度第二批全国科普示范县（市、区）。

2022年8月，平罗县被确定为国家知识产权强县建设试点县。

2021年12月，平罗县被列入2021年农业现代化示范区创建名单。

2021年12月，平罗县授牌命名为平安中国建设示范县。

2021年11月，平罗县被确定为第二批全国儿童青少年近视防控适宜技术试点县（区）。

2021年10月，2021年度全国投资潜力百强县市名单发布，平罗县名列第71。

2021年5月，根据第七次全国人口普查结果，平罗县人口数量为27.42万人，位列石嘴山市各县区人口数量排行榜第2位，位列宁夏各县市区人口数量排行榜第15位，位列全国各县市区人口数量排行榜第1876位。

平罗县位于宁夏平原北部，总面积2060平方公里，人口31.6万人，其中，少数民族人口9.8万人。平罗地处国家丝绸之路经济带、呼包银能源金三角、宁夏沿黄城市带等经济区前沿地带，距银川河东机场60公里，距宁夏惠农陆路口岸30公里，区位优势明显。多元合金、电石化工、精细化工、煤化工、新能源、装备制造、生物医药和优质水稻及制种、草畜、瓜菜、生态水产是我县的优势特色产业。先后吸引中钢、中粮、汇源、丽珠等国内500强和行业领军企业落户平罗。在第十一届全国县域经济基本竞争力与科学发展评价中，平罗县位列西部百强县第60位。在2012年度中国最具投资潜力中小城市百强县评比中，位居第87位。
