盘古开天地后过了很久，大地上没有人类，只有一些动物和一个美丽的女神——女娲。

Long after Pangu pushed apart the sky and the earth, there was no man on the earth except some animals and a beautiful goddess, Nüwa.

 没有人陪她说话，女娲感觉很孤独。

Nüwa felt lonely, because she had no one to talk to.

“我怎样才能找到伙伴呢？”女娲问自己。

“How could I find someone to keep my company?” Nüwa asked herself.

 一天，当女娲在一个池塘边散步时，她发现池塘水面上有一张漂亮的脸蛋——那是她自己的脸蛋！这让她兴奋不已。她可以用池子里的黄泥做出跟她长得一样的小泥人。

One day, when she was walking around a pond, Nüwa saw a pretty face on the water of the pond—that was her own face! This made Nüwa excited. Using the mud from the pond, she could make a little thing that looked like her.

于是她抓起一些黄泥，用手指捏了又捏。不一会儿，一个婴儿般的小泥人就做成了。“妈妈！”小泥人喊道。这是多大的一个惊喜啊！女娲听到这声“妈妈”，感到真快乐！她有人要照顾了，她不再孤单。

So she grabbed some mud and squished it between her fingers. After a while, a little babylike thing was made! “Mama!” cried the baby. What a big surprise! How happy Nüwa was when she heard this! She had someone to take care of! She was not lonely any more.!

 她们一起笑，一起玩。

They laughed and played together.

 但是宝宝刚刚长大一点，就死了。

However, after the baby grew a little bigger, he died.

  “宝宝死了，我该怎么办？”女娲问自己。

“What could I do after the baby died?” Nüwa asked herself.

 女娲很伤心，因此她开始不停歇地用黄泥创造更多新的宝宝。他们在她周围欢呼雀跃，女娲又高兴起来了。

Nüwa was so sad that she started to make more new babies out of mud without stop. They jumped around her with cheers. Nüwa became happy again.

宝宝们慢慢长大，女娲给他们取了个名字：人。但是正如个宝宝一样，他们也会死去。所以女娲不得不继续创造更多的人。她太累了。

The babies grew bigger and older. Nüwa named them “human”. However, they would die after some time, just like the first baby. So Nüwa had to keep on making more babies. She was too tired.

“我怎样才能更有效地创造人呢？”女娲问自己。

 “How can I create humans more efficiently?” Nüwa asked herself.

 经过一番观察和思考，她从悬崖上扯下一条枯藤，蘸到泥浆里，然后飞向空中，把泥浆洒向大地。瞧！成千上万的宝宝在向她招手！“妈妈，妈妈！”这甜美的呼喊就是女娲辛勤劳动的回报。

After obseration and consideration, she picked up a dry vine from a cliff and dipped it into the mud. Then she flew into the sky and sprinkled drops of mud on the ground. Look, thousands of babies were waving to her! “Mama, Mama.” The sweet voice was the best reward of her hardwork.

 人的身体不是永恒的。女娲意识到她无法改变这个事实。

Man is mortal. Nüwa realized that she could not change the fact.

“那我该怎样帮助人类自我繁殖呢？”女娲问自己。

“So how can I help humans multiply on their own?” Nüwa asked herself.

深思熟虑之后，她做出了一个重大决定。她要把新创造出的宝宝分成两类：男和女。当一对男女长大之后，他们会结合，然后创造出他们自己的宝宝。照顾自己的宝宝是父母的责任。

After careful consideration, she made a big decision. She would create new babies into two different categories: boys and girls. When a boy and a girl grew up, they would combine and produce new babies on their own. It would be the parents’ responsibility to take care of their own babies.

 计划马上实施。因此，越来越多的人来到这个世界，并且世代相传。

The plan was put into practise. Thus, more and more people came to the earth, from generation to generation.

女娲终于可以休息了，她游到了南海，洗了个舒舒服服的澡。

Finally, Nüwa could take a rest. She swam into the South China Sea to take a good bath.

 看着陆地上的人们过着幸福的生活——欢笑、歌唱、跳舞——对于女娲来说，就是极大的满足。

Watching people on land live their happy lives, laughing, singing and dancing, is a great satisfaction to Nüwa.
