Heather Roberge has been appointed chair of the department of architecture and urban design in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. Roberge, who has served as UCLA faculty since 2002, is also the principal designer and founder of the building design company Murmur: Architecture and Environments.

“UCLA Architecture and Urban Design has the opportunity, and responsibility, to be thought leaders in the context of a rapidly evolving Southern California,” Roberge said. “As a leading center of the technology, entertainment, manufacturing and mobility industries, L.A.’s vital urban and cultural landscapes have a global impact. I see my role as a vocal champion of the work of our talented faculty and students, and of architecture more broadly.”

Her research at UCLA and professional work investigate the spatial, structural and atmospheric potential that digital technologies have on the theory and practice of building. Her teaching emphasizes innovative approaches to material, computation and manufacturing to expand the formal vocabulary and spatial implications of building envelopes and assemblies.

Roberge has received numerous accolades in recognition of her work including the 2016 Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York and awards from the American Institute of Architects for her projects “Succulent House” and “En Pointe” in 2011 and 2015 respectively. Her work has been published in A+U, Wallpaper, Architectural Record, Log, 306090, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times and exhibited in group shows in the United States and abroad.

Roberge, who is an associate professor, takes over for interim chair, Neil Denari.
