Spring rolls

02

春节(Spring rolls)也叫农历新年(Lunar New Year)。

此外,春卷被油炸变成金色,让人想起了金条(deep frying turns the spring roll into a golden colour, reminiscent of bars of gold)。

So if you want toinvite more wealth into your lifeby way of a fried food, have some spring rolls in honour of the saying "huang jin wan liang!"Wishing you tonnes of gold!

Whole fish

There are two reasons whywhole fish is considered luckyat Lunar New Year.

The first is that having the head and the tail of the fish intact represents a good beginning and a good end for the year ahead

The word for fish in Chinese isyu, which also sounds the same as the Chinese word forsurplus.

所以,“每年都有鱼”(年年有鱼 "every year have fish")的说法听起来和“每年都有盈余”(年年有余 "every year have surplus")一模一样。

May you have more than you need for the coming year!

Long life noodles

04

嗯,有些面条做得特别长,在生日时吃,象征着长寿(to symbolise a long life)。

These can be thinwheat noodlesoregg noodles, and it doesn't matter so much how they're served — simple soup noodles, or as a base for something extravagant like crab with ginger and shallots.

The idea is that youdon't cut the noodles no matter how long they are(so don't break them when they're dry like you would when thespaghetti'stoo big for the pot), because of what the noodles symbolise: yourlongevity.

Having a bowl ofregular noodlesis also asuitable stand-in for long life noodles, soslurp away happilyknowing that you're wishing yourself and those you're dining with a long life.

Year Cake

Thissweetand verychewyandstickycake is made fromglutinous rice flour, sugar and honey.

It can be eaten as is, orsliced thinlyanddipped in egg and then pan-fried.

当烹饪时,它呈现出更为焦糖化的味道,甚至更耐嚼的质地(it takes on a more caramelised flavour and even chewier texture),但是无论你用哪种方式,它都会是甜甜蜜蜜新年的开始,但是这种食物的名字则更为重要( it's a sugar hit intended to start the new year sweetly, but the name is significant too.)。

The idea here is towish you a new year that's better (taller) than the previous one.

这可能意味着加薪( a raise)、升职(a promotion),做好你的工作(doing well at what you do)。

Festive fruits

In China, Spring Festival marks the end of winter.

You can imagine how brightly oranges, mandarins, and kumquats would stand out on a grey day.

These citrus fruits'resemblance to giant balls of goldmakes theman adored Lunar New Year feature, withkumquat treesbeinga common decorationin homes, businesses and public areas.

As for its luck-giving properties, it doesn't hurt that the word for orange (cheng) sounds the same as the word for success (cheng).

Lunar New Year is all aboutfamily reunions.

These are made fromglutinous rice flourandthefillingis commonly a mix of ground black sesame and sugar, or red bean paste, or a mix of peanuts and sugar.

They're often served ina sweet soup flavoured with brown sugar and ginger, and eaten on New Year's Eve.

Simply boil the dumplings untilthey are nice and buoyant, then takea tiny biteto enjoythe sweet fillings oozing into your mouth.

The phrase to accompanyeating these dumplings is "tuan tuan yuan yuan". Tuan yuan meansreunionand yuan meansround, like the dumpling.

In the centre of the box are oftenmelon seeds, dyed red for luck.

还有莲子 lotus seeds(莲子中的“子”也与儿子同音)和莲藕 lotus roots(这听起来发音像是在说“有”)。

So basically it'sa box of sweetnessthat wishes you many children. No pressure!
