tell sb. sth.与tell sb. of/about sth.两种表达的意义大致相同，但在本质上还是存在差异的。

1.“tell+间接宾语+直接宾语”，表示“告诉某人某事”，直接宾语通常都是能够直接告诉对方具体内容的名词（如story, joke, lie, secret, truth, news, way, number, answer, price, time, address, name...等等）。例如：

The teacher didn't tell us the answer instantly. 老师没有立即将答案告诉我们。

2.“tell+宾语+状语（介词短语作方面状语）”，of/about后所接的表“事物”或“人”的名词常不宜用作动词tell的直接宾语，因为它们的内容是无法直接告诉给对方的，尽管有时也译为“告诉某人某事”，但其真实意义是“告诉某人一些有关……的情况”。例如：

She daren’t tell the boss of the safe. 她不敢把保险箱的事告诉老板。

He told the police about the missing girl. 他告诉警察一些有关失踪姑娘的情况。

▲ 有些名词在特定的场合既可作直接宾语，也可作介词of/about的宾语，但意义不同。比较：

He told me his name. 他把他的名字告诉了我。

He told me about his name. 他把他名字的事讲给我听。
