原标题：英文写作是否可以用firstly, secondly, thirdly？

不少同学写议论文时喜欢用firstly, secondly, thirdly…来列举论点，这种写法虽然语法上没问题，但可能不是最好的写法，我们可以用其他的说法来替换。

实际上一些英语母语人士会避免使用first, secondly, thirdly这样的说法，而是用first, second, third来代替，因为他们认为像firstly这样的说法过于累赘。

根据《韦氏词典》官网的说法，18世纪的词典学家Samuel Johnson以及Noah Webster甚至认为firstly不是一个合格的英语单词。在19世纪初的《韦氏词典》中也没有收录这一单词，直到1847年词典才终于收录了单词，但词条的解释是： Improperly used instead of first

词典学家之所以对firstly存在意见，很大程度上是因为他们认为单词根本没有存在的必要。单词first已经能够涵盖firstly所有的意思，没必要再创造一个新词出来，而且firstly的存在可能会让人误以为first不是副词——实际上first本身就有副词用法。

此外，在写作中用firstly也会显得累赘，不如用first简洁。因此，国外有不少写作指南会建议读者用first, second, third…这些用法来替代。

当然，除了说first, second, third…我们还可以用其他的说法，比如：

(1) First…In addition…Finally…

(2) First…Additionally…Finally…

(3) To begin with…In addition…Lastly…

(4) One reason is…Another reason is…Finally…

举个例子，在议论文中我们可以说：There are three reasons for doing XX. One reason is…Another reason is…Finally...

或者：There are three factors leading to XX problems. First…In addition…Finally… 具体写作的时候可以灵活应用。

需要注意的一点是，在列举分论点的时候不要用at first来表示“首先，第一点”，比如我们不能说：

There are two steps to signing in to our website. At first, type your login name. Next, type in your password.

而要写成：

There are two steps to signing in to our website. First, type your login name. Next, type in your password.

我们应该用at first来表示“一开始，起先”（in or at the beginning），比如： At firstI was nervous, but I soon started to relax. 起初，我感到紧张，但很快就开始放松下来。
