English Idioms

1. six of one, half-dozen of the othe

(six of one, half-dozen of the other = two options are equivalent:两个选择是相等的)

A dozen is 12, and a half-dozen is 6. If you buy 6 of one item, and a half-dozen (6) of another item, you have the same number of each - so this idiom is used to describe a situation where two options are equivalent; there is little or no difference between the two options.

We could take either the bus or the train to Boston. It's six of one, half-dozen of the other - they both take about 4 hours, and the price isn't much different:我们可以乘公共汽车或火车去波士顿。

2. half-hearted

(half-hearted = without energy or enthusiasm:没有精力和热情;敷衍;不走心)

The heart is considered the center of emotion. So if you do something with only 50% (half) of your heart, you do it without emotion, energy, or enthusiasm. You can also say "my heart wasn't in it" - this has the same meaning.

I really wasn't in the mood to exercise today. I made a half-hearted attempt, but I gave up after about five minutes.

3. at the drop of a hat

(at the drop of a hat = suddenly and without warning or preparation:突然地,毫无准备地)

In the past, there was a tradition of dropping a hat to signal the start of a race, game, or duel. The competition would start at the exact moment the hat hit the ground.

I have a wife, two kids, and a job. I can't just take off for a month-long trip at the drop of a hat.

4. fits like a glove

(fits like a glove = when clothing is the perfect size:当衣服是完美的尺寸;非常合身)

You wear gloves on your hands. They shouldn't be too tight (too small) or too loose (too big). This idiom can be used to talk about any piece of clothing (shirt, pants, a dress, etc.)

That pair of jeans was too loose, but this one fits me like a glove!
