但其实march除了表示“三月”，

还有很多意思！

特别是Long March 和 wedding march,

都不是三月的意思！

为什么March是三月的意思？

March 的故事：

“March” is named for the Roman god of war, Mars. This was the time of year to resume military campaigns that had been interrupted by winter.

三月是以罗马战神马尔斯的名字命名的。这是一年中恢复被冬季中断的军事行动的时候。

In the early Roman calendar, March (or Martius) was the first month of the calendar year. As March brought the first day of spring with the vernal equinox, it was the start of new beginnings.

在早期的罗马历中，March(或Martius)是日历年的第一个月。March的春分带来了春天的第一天，这是新的开始。

March became the third month when January and February, which were added to the end of the Roman calendar around 700 BCE, instead became the first and second months around 450 BCE.

Long March不是“长长的的三月”

Long March作固定搭配时，march用的是“行进，行军”的意思。

（中国红军的） 长征的公认翻译就是：Long March。（注意首字母要大写）首字母小写的long march则表示“长途行军”。

例句：

The Long March-11 is the only series in the Long March family that uses solid propellants.

长征11号是长征家族中唯一一个使用固体推进剂的火箭。

In a long march of several hundred kilometres, no one dropped out.

长途行军几百公里，没有一个人掉队。

wedding march 是什么意思？

这里可不要理解成“婚礼长征”，march在此处用的是“进行曲”的意思。进行曲是军队中统一行进步伐的周期性旋律，大概外国人不想总制造新单词，所以就用march同时表示“行军”和“进行曲”。

所以wedding march就是“婚礼进行曲”的意思。

在英语中，hare表示“野兔”，那么这个短语的意思就是“像三月的野兔一样疯狂”？其实意思八九不离十了，是“形容人极度疯狂或非常愚蠢”的意思。

steal a march on sb

这里的 march 首字母没有大写，所以不能理解为三月，而要解释为行进。steal 是偷，所以这个短语指的就是那些先偷偷走了一步的人，也就是抢先一步的人。
