The Story Behind Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll

You've seen the heroically suave delivery by weatherman Liam Dutton—but just what, or rather where, was he talking about?

The pronunciation isn't easy (llan-vire-pooll-guin-gill-go-ger-u-queern-drob-ooll-llandus-ilio-gogo-goch) and the meaning is just as odd (St. Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the Red Cave), but this tiny town in Wales is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. Why? That lengthy name, of course.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch, or Llanfairpwllgwyngyll for short, or simply Llanfair PG for the shortest, road-sign-friendly version, is a shock of tourist kitsch in the middle of pastoral Anglesey. In fact, the town (population: 3,040, as of the 2001 census) is little more than a rail station, gas station, a few restaurants, and one massive souvenir shop. And, oh, the souvenirs! Llanfair PG peddles every sort of nicknack Wales offers and then some. Mountains of shortbread! Wheels of cheese from the Snowdonia Cheese Company! Inflatable dragons in the colors of the Welsh flag! Jars of homemade lime curd! Six-inch-long fridge magnets and key chains emblazoned with the town's name! And, of course, racks of postcards ready to receive the extra-long postmark when you send them from the town's post office, conveniently located in the next doorway.

The best part of Llanfair PG may be that it's so easy to visit. You don't even have to stop there to get an Instagram-worthy shot of the sign; the Virgin Train services running from London to Holyhead go by at a picture-taking-friendly pace; and if you're driving, it's one of the first towns you pass by after crossing the Britannia Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey.

Fun fact: Llanfair PG may hold the title of longest town name in the world, but it loses in the run for longest general place name. That honor goes to a hill in New Zealand with an astonishing 85 letters: "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu."

So, how's the weather there?
