（5）后接动名词

She likes dancing rather than singing.她喜欢跳舞，而不喜欢唱歌。

（7）后接两句并列分句

（8）后接过去分词

（9）后接现在分词

（10）后接what引导的名词性从句

It was what he meant rather than what he said that annoyed me.真正使我生气的不是他说的话而是他的意图。

三、当rather than作从属连词时：

（1）引导选择状语从句(adverbial clause of preference)

一般翻译成“宁可......也不......”，从句多位于主句前。

Rather than go there by air,I'd take the slowest train.我宁愿坐最慢的火车，也不乘飞机去那里。

注意！！！当主句中有would,should时，也可将位于句末的rather than从句中的rather转移到主句中去，如：

I'd rather take the slowest train than go there by air.我宁愿做最慢的火车，也不乘飞机去那里。

（2）引导比较状语从句(adverbial clause of com parison)

翻译成“与其......不如......”，一般多用“rather than that...”的结构，从句多位于主句后。

I will help you rather than that you(should)have any trouble.我会帮助你，不会让你遇到任何麻烦。

I should thank you rather than that you thank me.与其你感谢我，还不如我感谢你。

（注意！从句中的谓语动词一般用虚拟语气，should可省略。）

那么，问题就来了，怎样判断什么时候rather than是介词还是连词？

教你一个很简单的方法，看rather than前后的成分是否并列，

如果是并列成分，即词性一样，如同是名词，形容词等，rather than充当连词，否则，rather than充当介词。

instead of的用法比较简单，只充当介词短语，让我们来看看它后面可以接什么：

（1）后接名词

I give him advice instead of money.给了他忠告而没有给他钱。

（2）后接代词

Will you go to the party instead of me?你代我去赴宴，好吗？

（3）后接形容词

Things are now better instead of worse.情况不是更坏，而是更好了。

（4）后接副词

He walks slowly instead of quickly.他走得慢，而不是快了。

（5）后接动词（短语）

That increased instead of decreased our courage.那不但没有减弱反而增强了我们的勇气。

（6）后接动名词（短语）

We should encourage them instead of throwing cold water on them.我们应该鼓励他们而不是对他们泼冷水。

（7）后接动名词复合结构

They must make up their own minds instead of our making their minds for them.他们应当自己下决心而不是我们替他们下决心。

动名词复合结构是什么呢？

物主代词/人称代词或名词所有格/普通格与动名词连用，就构成了动名词的复合结构。物主代词或名词所有格等是动名词的逻辑主语。

例如：The students'knowing English well will help them to learn French.学生学好了英语对学习法语有帮助。

（名词所有格the student's+动名词knowing构成的复合结构，在此句中作主语。）

（8）后接介词短语

He laughed with(us)instead of at us.他跟我们一起笑，并不是嘲笑我们。

（9）后接动词不定式（短语）

I went to borrow a book instead of to buy one.我去借了一本书，而不是买了一本书。

（10）后接从句

He describes it as he saw instead of as it was.他是按他们看到的样子而不是按其本来的面目来描述的它。
