一、用作实义动词

A. 用作不及物动词

1. 生长，发育：

Trees don’t grow in the Antarctic. 南极不长树木。

They grow to twenty feet. 它们可长到20英尺长。

A growing child needs plenty of sleep. 正发育的孩子必须睡眠充足。

2. 增长，发展：

The village is growing into a town. 这村庄在发展成为一个城镇。

B. 用作及物动词

1. 种植，栽种：

Growing flowers is no easy job. 养花不容易。

You should grow your own vegetables. 你应该自己种菜吃。

2. 留(须、发等)：

He grows a long beard. 他留有长胡子。

C. 短语

1. grow into

(1)长成，变成：

He has grown into a fine young man. 他已长成一个英俊的小伙子。

(2)长大了(可以穿)：

The coat is too big for him now, but he will grow into it. 这上衣他现在穿太大，等他长大些再穿就合适了。

2. grow on 逐渐赢得…的喜爱：

The new house slowly began to grow on her. 她开始慢慢喜欢上了这所新房子。

3. grow out of

(1)由…产生：Their love grew out of friendship. 他们的爱情从友谊中产生。

(2)长大了(而穿不了)：

Mary has grown out of all her clothes. 玛丽已长大，所有的旧衣服都穿不了。

4. grow up 长大(成人)：

When he grew up, he became a great scientist. 他长大之后, 成了一位伟大的科学家。

二、用作连系动词

用作连系动词，其后可接：

(1) 形容词（包括由过去分词转化来的形容词）。如：

The sea is growing calm. 大海变得平静起来。

I grew excited, and a little frightened. 我变得很激动，也有点害怕。

(2) 不定式（主要限于be, like, love, hate, respect, understand等少数动词）。如：

You’ll grow to like the place. 你会变得喜欢这个地方的。

She’s growing to be more and more like her mother. 她长得越来越像她妈。

The public is more and more growing to respect efficiency. 公众正在日益重视效率。

He grew to understand her reasons for leaving. 他慢慢理解了她离开的原因。

(3) 介词短语。如：

It has grown out of date. 它已经过时了。

The little plant grew into a tree. 幼苗长成了一棵树。

三、grow与grow up

两者意思不同，前者指“长”“生长”“成长”等；后者指“长大（成人或成熟）”。如：

Children grow rapidly. 小孩长得很快。

The wheat is growing well. 麦子长得很好。

What are you going to be when you grow up? 你长大后想干什么?
