4.genius

在指能力的词里面，语气是最强的，犹指人天赋的高度才能与智力。

例如：

The man had genius and had made his mark in the aviation world.

Chaplin was not just a genius, he was among the most influential figures in film history.

5.talent

也是指人的才能，在语义上会比genius稍弱，所以其尤其指出的是人在某一方面具有可发展和培养的较突出的天赋和才能。

例如：

She is proud that both her children have a talent for music.

He never prostituted his great acting talent by appearing in television advertisement.

6.competence

这个是指才能和能力中较为正式的用词，常用于工作中，较侧重的指令人满意的业务能力和水平，达到了能够胜任某项工作的要求。

例如：

The ability to write is a supreme test of linguistic competence.

It is easy to criticize the competence of those with greater responsibilities than ourselves, and even easier to fantasize about how we would do the job better.

7.faculty

这个‘才能’区别于其他的才能，是指特殊的才能和智力。

例如：

An unerring faculty for detecting hypocrisy is one of her most useful attributes.

But what accounts for this peculiar faculty?

8.gift

这个指的也不是一般的才能，着重的指某个人的天赋才能在某一方面有比较显著的本领，所以含有不能用一般的规律进行解释的意思。

例如：

This diplomat possessed an excellent gift for repartee.

As a youth he discovered a gift for teaching.

9.aptitude

这个意思上与ability有点相近，也是指先天或后天习得的能力，但是aptitude指的是能够自如的运用这种能力的能力，毕竟拥有是一种能力，使用也是一种能力，所以aptitude还含有表示接收能力强，能够迅速的掌握一种学术训练或艺术技巧的意思在里面。

例如：

He drifted into publishing and discovered an aptitude for working with accounts.

Just because our aptitude is hardwired doesn't mean it can't improve with practice and skill.

Privately, the Western parents may worry that their child does not test well or have aptitude in the subject or that there is something wrong with the curriculum and possibly the whole school.

最后在来给大家分辨一下这九个词里面的‘三剑客’——ability、capability 和 capacity。因为这三个词在许多用法上面是一样的，很容易让人使其混淆。例如：一个人可能拥有每周读两本书的能力。这个能力ability、capability 和 capacity都是可以的。但是要注意， capacity所表达的是其余其它动词共同拥有的含义通过比喻得到了进一步的扩展，拥有一些其他动词没有的特殊用法。Capacity 往往与体积、容量和数量相关。在这方面是不能够与其他两个互换使用的。ability 和 capacity 之间的另一个常见不同点在于，对于人类和动物而言，capacities 是天生的，而 abilities 是学到的。例如，一个孩子可能天生就具有成为钢琴大师的 capacity，但是弹钢琴的 ability 必须通过学习获得。同时，Capability 通常表示 ability 的极限。例如：你说你有弹好钢琴曲的ability，那么你是否有连续弹奏十首钢琴曲的capability。此外，capabilities 往往是一种非此即彼的命题，而ability 往往是程度上的问题。例如，我可能会说，我虽然有写作的 ability，但是我没有写小说的 capability。不过，跟这些词的其它区别一样，这些不同比较模糊，除了一般固定的用法之外，这些词都是可以互换使用的。
